The Raiders lost against the Newcastle Knights last night at Canberra Stadium.

The Canberra Raiders have been defeated by a rampant Newcastle Knights 36-6 in their Round 21 clash at Canberra Stadium.
Trailing 12-0 at the break, the Raiders couldn’t handle the Knights after Sandor Earl was sin-binned and Tom Learoyd-Lahrs left the field injured, missing a possible opportunity to move into the top eight.

Couch Furner has blamed the loss on an “inability to build pressure“.

“They didn’t allow us (to get a roll one), we’ve got a group of players in there that are banged up,” Furner said.
“They didn’t shy away from that, but if you’re not building that pressure, and that’s the football we’re in at the moment.
“We didn’t handle that well in the second half and we got outplayed in the second half.”

I like Furnsy – but he’s doing a shite job with a shite team. Let’s look at former Raiders doing well at other clubs coaching and assisting:

Craig Bellamy and Al Corvo at the Storm. Michael Maguire and Wayne Collins at the Rabbits. Neil Henry at the Cowboys. The Raiders had a initial talks with Wayne Bennett – the Raiders Grand Final co-coach in 1987 – and missed out when he went to the Knights.

Now you would’ve thought Ricky Stuart would come down and talk to his best mate, and CEO of the Raiders, Don Furner Jr. But no – he signed for the next 3 years at the Eels. He didn’t even bother coming down here to talk to them. Why? Well there is the issue with his beautiful little girl – but let’s ignore that for a moment.

He didn’t come here because our blokes roll over whenever the going gets tough. They have no passion. They have no ticker. They have no ambition. Even if Stick was offered $2million a year at the Green Machine – I’m told he wouldn’t have taken it. TWO MILLION $$$!!!! Apparently a 3 year coaching contract is far too short to fix the huge problems at Raiders.

If you have a really good coach – players will come. But if the good coaches aren’t bothered coming here – what chance have we got?

The Knights side that turned up yesterday was red hot and would have troubled all the top sides. The Faders should be complimented for keeping the differential to 30 points, because it would have been much greater without the last ditch defence. And I am still stunned by the Uate pass out the back that resulted in a try – to Boyd I think.

So throughout the season Furner has blamed the penalty count, chicken wings, the ref, availability of his players and now the “inability to build pressure“. Everyone but himself.
I wish he’d step down at the end of the season, but I guess he won’t.

Go the mighty Knights!

I think that’s our finals run over. Furner was right about not being able to gain momentum, but maybe if we had a half decent coach and board then maybe we could change for the better. The Furner and McIntyre clique needs to go, we should have offered Ricky Stuart a position.
