Rain delays roadworks

The Canberra Times has the astonishing news that the unprecedented phenomena of winter rain is causing chaos to the genii responsible for the roadworks colliding across town:

Road projects at Molonglo have been deluged, leading to the standing down of 140 workers, and the city’s highest profile roads job – the Russell roundabout bridge – is having a ‘‘nightmare’’ and needs at least a week of clear weather to get back on track. The man building the earthworks for John Gorton Drive, the main arterial route that will serve the city’s new Molonglo suburbs, Geoff Hewatt of Hewatt Earthworks, said the job had been hit with flooding from all sides.

Water from the sky? I mean who saw that coming?

Maybe the rain made the GDE fall down too…

Cool, Canberra Times is now in the business of inventing new verbs like “deluged”, when phrases like “flooded out” has done perfectly well do date. What DO their subeditors do?

Go shopping for a new Thesaurus.

This is the reaction when a lousy 40mm falls? Over two days??

You ain’t seen nothing until you’ve seen a metre come down in 24 hours.

Seriously, the ACT Government can’t keep up with pothole repairs in a drought. How did they cope when it used to rain a little? They’d be in serious strife working for a local government anywhere north of Coffs Harbour. Yet all those Councils cope quite ably don’t they?

And on the roadworks, well they’ve had a dream run weather wise really. A few days here and there is no big deal.

Meanwhile coming in on Barry Drive this morning, it looked as though after the rains a tree had come unstuck down the embankment, and was partially covering the bus lane.

Probably for the best that they haven’t opened it yet and still have those speed restrictions in place DESPITE IT BEING BLOODY FINISHED!!!

They hadn’t finished the offroad bike path past the lights, as for the first section to the side street, just as well given the tree but otherwise its just delayed for the grand opening.

and needs at least a week of clear weather to get back on track
Sounds like they’re just going to wait till the water dries out.. instead of pumping it out!

It was there yesterday morning after out night of wild weather. there was a few chaps in hi-vis and hard hats from the road building mob staring blankly at it. Since it was still there this morning, it obviously is not within the remit of the road making contractors to move it and are waiting for TAMS do shift it.

And as for the work being finished but the flash new bus and bike lanes still being closed, the only reason I can think of for this is that they are waiting for the grass to grow on the verges so that His Chiefliness can have a nice green backdrop at the official opening.

So does this mean every time it rains the new tunnel under Kings Ave will fill up with water?

Will probably help to stick some drains in, as unlevelled clay doesn’t tend to let water run off so well. Daresay that’s part of the plans, but this is Canberra after all…

So are these the guys we should be thanking for breaking the drought?

It stands to reason that if you build a road on mud, it’ll fall apart pretty quickly.

Sorry JB, but I dont understand the gist of the post!

I think JB is referring to the fact these road project companies forgot about Murphy’s law.
