Rain

According to my records, rainfall so far this year has just passed the 400mm mark. Compared to previous years, we have had more rain so far this year than for all of 2006, and are on par for 2005, 100mm ahead of 2004, and 50mm ahead of 2003 for the same period.

Annual Rainfall

(The little blue line at the end of 2006 was the 70mm dropped in the New Years Eve hailstorm over Tuggeranong)

It is worthwhile noting though that rainfall this year has been boosted by the very late arrival of the spring rains in 2006, which didn’t arrive until January and persisted until July. The spring rains were also late this year, but nowhere near as much as last.

Ahh, the black pudding – even the white bits were black!

mebbe we should all go live in denley moor – it were always rainin’ there. even when it weren’t rainin’, precipitation was so heavy you’d be damp anyway… (rather tasty black puddings, very black puddings, too…)

now there’s another thread soon – where are the best black puddings and where did the good pork pies get to.

but on topic – the rain isn’t consistent. it was bucketing down at ours in inner norf a few weeks back and i looked at the BoM site to see how much and ‘canberra’ recorded nil in that time… (is that the airport?) rain has become a lot more localised, with isolated showers, since i’ve been here [20yrs], or is that me poor imagination gone bunk?

I have noticed that ACTEWAGL have gone very quiet. I really miss those dire warnings about deceasing dam levels which helped me accept the increasing charges.

If you want to see a whole continent of weather freaks discussing everything aobut the weather, head to
http://www.weatherzone.com.au and click on the forums link up the top right.

There are a LOT of people who are into weather in Oz. We even have foreigners coming in, to talk about the weather.

Tuggeranong has been cheating, its rainfall has been substantially higher. We need to grow wheat out there.

I haven’t measured rainfall any other year, as I got a rain gauge for last Christmas!

I have recorded 401.25mm so far this year in my backyard rain gauge (in Tuggeranong).

Although, 64mm of this came in the one night from the New Years Eve storms though!

Ahh the good old rivet not being welded properly into the imbrazier.

Never seen it myself, but I hear it splits an oak ‘andle pretty quickly.

Thanks Deano.

And the Doctor for the Eric rendition. Who can forget the Spear & Jackson No. 4

Sorry Deano, but with all this talk of precipitation I just couldn’t help but be reminded of Eric.

Seriously though, thanks for taking the time to put that chart together. I would have sworn we were having a drier year.

The Ballad of Eric Olthwaite

There was a lad from Denley Moor
From Castle Street he came
He made this dark town proud again
Eric Olthwaite was his name.

Chorus:
Oh Eric, Eric Olthwaite
You’re the one they’re singing for
Eric, Eric Olthwaite,
The King of Denley Moor

Oh, he told the world of shovels
to be found in Denley Moor
Of the rainfall that was static here
At twenty-eight point four.

Chorus

Having checked the rainfall average
From the rain gauge he would run to
See Howard Molson put his shovel
Next to the other one.

Chorus

Do you maintain your own weather station Deano?

If so, any link if it’s on-line?

Can you overlay that with dam levels?
