rainbow lorikeets

Ben_Dover has sent in this lovely picture:

Rainbows at the Pinnacle

A tree down there had a about 20 little rainbow lorrikeets in it a couple of mornings back. Lovely little fellows, shame I didn’t get a good shot of them. Not that common around here are they?

they actually could be baby swift lorrikeets, which are native to Canberra, but rare.

They are Rainbow lorikeets. Swifts are significantly smaller than the rainbows and mostly green, with only small patches of colour on their faces and wings, not big bands of colour across their head and breast like the rainbows.

According to my Slater Field Guide, they are Rainbow Lorikeets (eastern form).
I have a whole bunch of pics taken at Tuross Heads but all in b&w by accident. Might as well be magpies…

They are argumentative little rioters, like most birds who live on sugar.

Nice photo!

For a ‘not a good shot’ I think it’s rather lovely.
I’ve never seen them around here.

What’s the defining difference sepi? What should I look for when I see them next?

I saw a couple yesterday in the trees near Garran Primary School, which seem to be housing a pretty diverse population at the moment. We’re currently attempting to entice them to our back yard for some photos…

They’re not local to the ACT, but there has been a population in the Hawker area for the last 7 or 8 years that is steadily growing with each breeding season. They were originally an aviary escapee I would imagine.

There are at least one pair in the nature reserve between Fadden and Gowrie. They regularly visit a feeder in someone’s backyard along with King Parrots, Eastern Rosellas, Crimson Rosellas, Long Billed Corellas etc. Sadly, the pair of visiting Gang Gangs haven’t been seen for 2 seasons now.
I suspect these escaped from an aviary as well.
