Rake-ing over dead NCA coals

The CT has got a typical whingeing piece this morning about Gary Rake, CEO of the NCA. In it, he blames everyone but himself for the failures of his organisation – “internal sabotage” (whatever that is), the community for losing faith in the NCA (what a surprise), the Rudd budget cuts, linkages with the ACT government, ad nauseum.

The problem, Gary, starts at the top. A few years ago, I was involved with an issue where you were invited to provide the community with reasons why the NCA was hell-bent on destroying an important part of Canberra’s history. You refused.

The reason why the NCA is under threat is because of your inability to engage with the very community that you are now blaming for your demise. You talk about accountability and transparency – look very, very hard at your own personal performance, Gary

”I make no apologies for the fact that we ostracise the people unwilling to engage on behalf of the organisation. First and foremost we lock them out of the decision-making process … and over time we have and will work them out of positions of influence and out of the organisation altogether.”

Pretty extraordinary comment to make…

Sounds like being located in the Treasury building, the NCA has taken on the same characteristics as Treasury and Finance. Something strange happens to people when they enter that building.

It’s because they all listen to the ABC.

Ah, so that’s the reason. Makes sense to me.

The NCA lost all legitimacy when it allowed a group of vagrants to start camping opposite old Parliament House.

I realised that too, amaroo, but this is typical of his modus operandi. It’s all about a style within NCA of blaming others (everything and anyone but themselves), and deliberately shutting those others out. This particularly applies to community representatives. The aim is for everyone else to simply go away and leave them alone. That adversarial and combative attitude comes through loud and clear in the CT article.

Yes it was meant to refer to internal staffing.

I was thinking of it more from the perspective of effective staff management (or otherwise).

If I was in a management job interview and got the ubiquitous “how do you deal with a poor performing staffer?” question, I don’t think that would be the sort of response to secure me the job…

Extraordinary, but typical, Al. What he does is lock community-minded people out of any engagement, until eventually they just give up in disgust. That’s how he wins. I think he and Neil Savery must be twins.

I read it as talking about people internally who are unwilling to engage the community – which makes an entirely reasonable statement from my point of view.
