Top flight rallying returns to Canberra on Saturday 29th October with the running of the final round of the Shannon’s Insurance ACT Rally Series. Competitors in the Trussme National Capital Rally will take to the rally tracks in the forests around Canberra to decide three titles, the Shannons Insurance ACT Rally Champion and the NSW State,Clubman and Excel titles.

Event Director, Adrian Dudok has set a challenging course that uses many of the competitive stages made famous by the former Rally of Canberra. Competitors will contest stages in the Kowen Forest outside Queanbeyan as well as roads that make up the Tidbinbilla area.

The event will start at 11:30am from the Canberra Centre “open air” car park on the corner of Cooyong Street and Genge Street, Civic. Competing cars will be on display from 10am.

Entries haven’t closed for the event but the organising committee is expecting a strong field as the event is also a round of the NSW State Championship, the NSW Clubman Championship and the NSW Hyundai Excel series.

With several series yet to be decided, spectators are likely to see spectacular sideways action as the various crews in Championship contention push their vehicles to the limit to secure the seconds that could win them a coveted title.

The Shannon’s ACT series is currently being led by Sydney driver Ben Cullen with his brother Mathew as co-driver. The Cullen’s didn’t contest the last round of the series in Bathurst but a strong showing in Canberra will see them secure the title.

But the outright victory is going to be a closely fought as the event has drawn two ex-ACT Champions from the sidelines. 2009 ACT Champion Michael Barrett will make an appearance in his Total Traction Services Mitsubishi Lancer and former ACT Champion Peter Taylor will be returning in his ex-Neal Bates Toyota Corolla, with son Michael call the corners. Both crews have the machinery and skill to be fighting strongly with Cullens for the win.

Also competing will be young Canberra driver Adrian Coppin in the FSportFiestaST, Coppin, one of only six Australians with an international FIA rating, is fresh from claiming second place in class and 20th outright in Australia’s recent round of the World Rally Championship on the Coffs Coast of NSW.

“I won’t be chasing the outright win against the more powerful 4wd cars but I will be looking for a strong outing and looking forward to getting back in the car.” Coppin claimed. The diminutive LHD Fiesta is surprisingly quick and will be well suited to Canberra’s tight forestry track.

The NSW Hyundai Excel series decider is also up for grabs this weekend with local Canberra driver Fro Horobin looking to claim his second series, but securing maximum points taking on officiating duties the fight will be strong with for the remaining title places still up for the taking.
