Rally of Canberra knocks down the prices

RallySport Magazine is very impressed by the knock down prices being charged to enter the struggling Rally of Canberra.

“Supplementary Regulations have been released for this year’s Rally of Canberra, with entry fees for privateers lower than for any other ARC or APRC event this year…

“Although we don’t have a major sponsor for the rally, we are forging ahead with plans and expect that this year’s rally will be one of the best Rally of Canberras on record.”

Sounds like a last hurrah.

I think it would be an amusing challenge to buy a car for no more than the entry fee and enter it for some true low-cost rally action 🙂

The best thing they could do is piss the bloody spectator ticket fees off

Yeah, that’ll really help out the balance sheet.

The best thing they could do is piss the bloody spectator ticket fees off and bring back the old days when we could basically pick out our own spot in the Forrest and watch some good action.

And I fully agree about the Kowen Forrest comment. The Brindies are the go.

Vic, if the average punter liked it, presumably it wouldn’t be floundering along without a sponsor.

It’s a special interest group, and a rather small one. Just because you’re part of it, doesn’t make it bigger.

Unless there is an Al Grasby statue, or something that the United Nations would be proud of, then the labor government running Canberra is keen to remove it or see it die.

They are decimating anything that the average punter likes.

If the BMSC runs the event rather than ACT events, perhaps the spectator options will be decent, and not just one or two super (using the term loosely) spots.

I’ve done my 5 years of spectator marshalling the event – there are tons of great places to watch out there – and for genuine rally fans, these interesting and slightly out of the way spots are regularly the best – Pierces Humps, the one halfway up Picadilly Circus etc.

Half the ticket cost to a tenner a day, you will triple or quadruple the number of spectators

And note to spectator spot organisers – no-one likes Kowen Forest. The Brindies are the Canberra spiritual home of rallying!

They’ve had the cheapest privateer entry fees for the Australian championship for a while, but it still won’t help. The fires and poor management mean there’s not a lot of roads to choose from and the roads that can be used are in crap condition. Its a rough event.

But I’ll be competing this year, paying the $850 to enter ‘cos we ran in 2005 (nice one, miss out on the cheaper entry by a year). It might be the last year the ACT Government is the promoter, but the Govt still has a contract for another few years yet. The local clubs will try to run it instead of the Govt, and maybe the Govt will pay the clubs the amount the contract penalty would be if it pulled out.
