Those inclined to reduce their environmental footprint will be fascinated to read about an attempt by Canberra’s Hannah and Tom to eat only locally produced food over the summer.

They set themselves the challenge of eating only what grows, moos or chews within a 150km radius of their home.

Hannah has recorded the entire experiment in a fascinating blog which is a delight for those who enjoy food and gardening.

There is a mill at Junee. But my understanding is that they have stopped actually producing their own wheat. My attempts to contact them were met with a resounding silence. So I didn’t really pursue that path…

Wheat did pose a problem for us, as I mention in one of the posts, but reflecting on the past month – it was an absolute necessity. We allowed Kialla, Four Leaf, and Demeter Farm wheat into our kitchen and bellies. I would definitely recommend those brands even if you are not considering eating locally.

This is really interesting. Down in this post, there is mention that lots of foodies will pay for gourmet local delicacies like olives or boutique cheese, but get their basics from the supermarket. My own opinion is that maintaining awareness of where your food comes from, and who has grown it, is a good thing.

By the way, there’s a mill at Junee that produces organic flour. Don’t know what it’s like as I’ve not seen it available for sale anywhere in Canberra, but would be interested to find out.

Nothing better than tuxing into a well done penguin

Fairy penguins for those who have more ‘exotic’ tastes.

In an effort to increase my environmental footprint to the size of a small African country, I am going to try and source everything I eat and drink from as far away as possible.

Starting with a bottle of scotch and a roasted penguin tonight.

Steer clear of Adelie penguins – they’re not at their best at the moment. In fact, I’d recommend the King penguin instead – goes nicely with a glass of good scotch.

Wow it’s cool to roast penguins now???? I have mine au naturuel (or however you say it) – chilled on ice

Having an Asian background, I must have my rice. If I don’t then I get grouchy and start chewing furnitures (and I don’t think they were grown within 150Km of Canberra either). And since there are no rice paddies around the Riverina, I’ll have to give this one a miss.

And, on the subject of carbohydrate, the bread might be baked locally but are the flour and yeast also local? Something to think about…

(From the article about the EPIC Farmers Market every Sat.)
unmatched sourdough from the stall in the back corner.
Have to disagree with that one. The store near the middle of the larger shed has the best sourdough. The producer has photos of his bakery on display.

Interesting reading.

The test will be over winter.
