Steve Whan postering

Last week AmyG noted that Labor’s NSW Member for Monaro Steve Whan, currently fighting for re-election, has been postering in the ACT in manners not legal in this jurisdiction.

Over the weekend we asked the Chief Minister’s office (responsible for Territory And Municipal Services) what was going to be done about this illegal activity by the campaign of their Labor colleague.

We got this response:

The TAMS City Rangers will visit this site today.

Any signs relating to the NSW election that are placed in the ACT and found not to be in accordance with the removable signs code of practice, which stipulates requirements such as line of sight and safety considerations, will be removed by City Rangers. Signs can be reported to Canberra Connect on 13 22 81.

As a follow up we’ve asked if fines will be applied, and will let you know if we get a reply.

Just on the issue of signs in particular – I notice the ACT must be one of the most heavily regulated areas in this regard. The roadside signs for upcoming events are so tiny you nearly crash your car trying to read them. As someone who enjoys going to fairs, government house open days etc this is really annoying. I think there should be some liberalisation of the rules for one off events by non-commercial enterprises.

I think the cheapskates should advertise on RiotACT.

ABC 1 o’clock news had an item saying the ACT rangers had removed Whan’s coreflutes from Canberra roads as they were illegally placed….RiotACT still breaking news first.

. They are just left there after the election is finished, sometimes they are there for weeks after.

in new zealand the signs have to be removed before the day of the election. Anything left up will result in large fines. That way, all the signs locations are recorded, and they make sure their removed on time.

I love how they employ people to put these these things up but never to remove them. They are just left there after the election is finished, sometimes they are there for weeks after.

I think you’ll find they can’t fine ol’ Stevey. They’d need to catch the person who is sticking them up. It’s like graffiti – gotta catch the guy doing it.

Nice. I assume that the City Rangers will recycle the signs in accordance with the NoWaste by 2010 policy?
