RAPID Rising

Simon Corbell is letting us know that two more vehicles fitted with the RAPID system (Recognition and Analysis of Plates Identified) are hitting the road.

A successful trial of RAPID during the first half of 2009 saw:

— 2,348 individual vehicles and people of interest being identified;
— 1,820 infringements being issued; and,
— 200 suspensions or disqualifications issued.

RAPID has also contributed to general crime reduction in the ACT with a number of stolen motor vehicles recovered as part of RAPID operations over the past 12 months. It has also identified some people with outstanding warrants for arrest.

“The RAPID system now operates from three specially designed vehicles and will also be used to identify vehicles owned by suspended or unlicensed drivers, and vehicles associated with persons wanted on warrant,” Mr Corbell said.

Terrifying to think we last so long without it, but nice to see.

The other point for road safety is that the statistics show unregistered cars and unlicensed drivers are massively over-represented in crashes.

Because they are cockheads.

Johnboy, you haven’t had a run in with an unlicenced/unregistered driver have you by chance ????

Smithy,

I think you’re wrong.

I believe a thing called the ‘nominal defendant’ or some such exists for just these events.

You ARE covered if the car that hits and hurts you is not covered by valid 3rd party insurance.

The only time you are not covered is if you are a passenger in a vehicle involved in an accident where the law deems no one is responsible. As in, if your driver dies of a heart attack whilst driving, crashes off the road, and as a result you sustain an injury. Probably a very rare occurence, but Sonic and Co have no intention of correcting this glaring anomaly.

One thing to keep in mind with all these drivers and cars

Read your insurance PDS and it clearly states they have the right to not honour your insurance claim as it has to be a registered roadworthy vehicle and the driver must be an active licence holder.

Further if the car does not have the third party insurance and there is an accident. You are liable for all your medical costs and will have to sue the other person to claim this money back also for loss of earnigns,. pain and suffering.

Medicare does not cover your for any costs when you are involved in an accident.

If they have no money you are up shit creek without a paddle.

Bad news, you pay your rego and therefore your third party insurance, this will cover the other driver for all medical costs and loss of earnings/ pain and suffering.

Get these unregistered, unlicenced drivers off our roads.

Now I’m not boganist, but…

I seem to remember we were told defective vehicles and registration had no affect on road accidents when they stopped annual vehicle inspections. RAPID is good, but bring back inspections and get the wrecks off the road.

I believe JB has hit the nail on the head here.

Here, here!

One of these were parked at the Canberra Hospital. Given their gorgeous purple colour with the cute pink trimming, I couldn’t help but take a photo. 2 security men were fast approaching me; I could only assume they were going to ask me to stop taking photos. On the contrary – they both pulled out their phones and started taking photos! Other people came and started taking photos – we all had a good laugh over the car together! 🙂

To be honest, the paint job reminds me of something from Mattel.

I think the notion is great, but I’d be concerned if they were storing the details of people who aren’t a match on the system ie issue of privacy re movement.

Other than the traffic jams these things cause, how could anyone complain about them?

Surely making it easier for police to remove people from the road who may be driving unregistered and unlicensed could only be a good thing.

“I wasnt aware that it was against the law to drive a vehicle which is owned by a suspended or unlicenced driver. Is this a new law or have I just been unaware of it?”

dvaey – Quite often if they are suspended for unpaid fines, their car is also suspended (registration). That renders it unregistered, not just for the suspended licence holder.

Could be more instances I guess. Or you may mean something else.

I’m not sure any assertions are being made here (I haven’t seen any elsewhere, but that doesn’t mean they don’t exist of course) about RAPID reducing the road toll, but rather that it’s an effective means “used to identify vehicles owned by suspended or unlicensed drivers, and vehicles associated with persons wanted on warrant.” This is more about law enforcement, and helping the police identify vehicles that are more likely to be being driven unlicensed, are unregistered or otherwise related to people involved in crime.

I thought RAPID was all about catching thieving crims rather than drivers doing the wrong thing. Apparently thieving crims use the drive to work times to transport their stolen goods using their stolen and defective vehicles.

RAPID is all about catching people who are breaking the Law… Chances are if you drive an unregistered, uninsured motor vehicle, you have probably done something else wrong as well.

Why pull over cars owned by people with suspended licences? You really aren’t that stupid are you dvaey? If the car is owned by a person with a suspended licence, the person with the suspended licence is most probably driving.

AND your most probably right, this is about helping Police catch traffic offenders, it really is, but it can find stolen cars, cars involved in crimes, cars that belong to criminals.

If you don’t drive unregistered, uninsured and without a licence – then why worry about it?

Ohh no it made me wait an extra 5 minutes because they were pulling cars over, get over it Princess…

About 1400 people will die on Oz roads this year. That’s approx 3.8 per day.

I hope this makes a difference but I won’t get carried away just yet.

This has nothing at all to do with reducing the road toll, or any other link to road safety (other than possibly taking some of its budget). The RAPID system is designed to catch those that dont pay their tax and fees to the government, and to enable police enforcement for activities that have happened previous to the vehicle being screened (ie. warrants or apparently being owned by an unlicenced driver).

You’re a very special person. Did the big bad Policeman give you a ticket. Quick call the Whaaambulance.

Fatalities are just one part of road safety – reducing the number of crashes overall is another part. Removing unlicensed/suspended/disqualified drivers and unregistered/uninsured vehicles another.

People jump up and down about the govt just targetting speeding – heres something different – operated by Police not a just a machine. Go out and get your car registered.

RAPID

Ensuring traffic jams and delays make your employees very late for work since 2009.

Just need to make RoboCop a reality and we can do away with real police all together. So long suckers!

Good to hear.

“Terrifying to think we last so long without it, but nice to see.”

Who could imagine what the road death toll would have been without it.

That would be the new purple FG Falcon with matching “RAPID 1” numberplates I saw in operation on Yarra Glen about 930 this morning. It did blend in fairly well with the shadow under the bridge it was hiding in.
