ACT Policing is seeking witnesses after a teenager was robbed of his bicycle yesterday (November 15) afternoon.

Around 4.15pm the 15-year-old male teenager lent his bicycle to a man while at the Yerrabi Ponds Skate Park in Gungahlin.

When the teenager requested the return of his bicycle, the man showed the teenager a knife which was concealed inside his vest and made verbal threats.

The man then rode away on the stolen bicycle. The bicycle can be described as mottled red and black in colour, with a number of stickers on the frame.

The man can be described as Pacific Islander in appearance with tanned skin, short black hair and dark facial hair. At the time of the incident the man was wearing baggy blue jeans, long sleeve top with a black ‘puffa’ vest. The man also spoke with a strong accent, possibly British.

Anyone who may have witnessed the aggravated robbery or knows someone matching the description of the man is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or via www.act.crimestoppers.com.au. Information can be provided anonymously.

Well, perhaps you could take your Anti-Americanism to a more appropriate thread.

Better yet, create your own site disparaging everything ‘ignorant’ America does that you don’t like and comment to everyone who visits.

Back on topic – Here’s hoping they catch this guy, whatever his dialect is, before he stabs someone. It’d also be nice if the kid got his bike back.

A Pacific Islander with a British accent? What IS a British accent – Scottish? Welsh? Geordie? Cockney?

Perhaps it was the grandson of the couple from Trinidad who lived next door to Eddie Booth in the 1970s Brit comedy Love Thy Neighbour.

Somebody’s been watching too much american TV. There is no such thing as a “british accent”, (with the possible exception of Irish, Welsh and Cornish). The UK has many regional accents, and even some dialects (eg Manx and Scottish), but no “british accent”.

The misnomer, “British accent”, is born of US insularity, ignorance, and their ever-shrinking vocabularic range.

+1

Perhaps what they mean is that he sounded like an American actor trying to do any one of the many accents found in Britain – they all sound exactly the same (and, surprisingly, sounds the same as an American actor trying to do an Australian accent).

I think it’s pretty safe to assume that when a 15 year old says British accent, he means English. It’s not correct, but it’s common sense for most of us.

/disparages the making of sweeping cultural generalisations
/makes a sweeping cultural generalisation while doing so
/manages to add verbosity to list of sins at the same time

Or maybe people (outside the UK) just use “British” to explain anyone who sound like they’re from the UK – although I doubt anyone would describe the Scottish, Irish or Welsh lilt* as British.

In any case, it’s horrible that this poor kid had his bike stolen by some jerk with a knife. Having been in similar situations as a kid, I’d say he’s likely to be more upset at losing his precious bike, than at the possibility that he could have been seriously or mortally injured.

*The term ‘Welsh lilt’ is said almost entirely tongue in cheek.

Given the way the Official Scrabble Dictionary has exploded in size, mostly with what I would call American slang (e.g., ‘Thang,’ ‘grrl,’ and ‘Facebook’), I’d say their vocabularic range has grown enormously.

I guess a 15yo boy wouldn’t make the best witness for describing ethnicity and accent. I notice they don’t even bother to try to give the man’s approximate age. Let’s hope he got the gender right.

As it was well above 20 degrees at that time on the 15th, a British bloke would have been in shorts, bare-chested, with a knotted handkerchief tied around his head.

But for all my jesting, it is sad for the kid who lost his bike and was threatened with a knife. I hope he’s okay.
