Raw sewage in Tuggeranong

Sammy 9 January 2007 10

ACT Greens MLA, Dr Deb Foskey, claims that raw sewage is making its way into Lake Tuggeranong. According to Dr Foskey, the sewage is entering the stormwater system some six kilometres from the lake, in the suburb of Chisholm.

She states that ACTEW have been advised of the problem but have failed to provide a solution. Local eyewitness reports indicate that extensive work was performed near the site in November & December 2006, including the installation of new pipework.

Dr Foskey rather curiously claims that “ACTEW may be dealing with the symptoms rather than the cause of the problem”. Perhaps toilet restrictions are the answer?

Indeed, but it only appeared on Deb’s website today:

I’ve heard of paths called ‘dogshit lane’ in Canberra, but this is ridiculous! And too close to home – I live quite close to this bike path with the overflowing sewage. I would like it fixed properly. It is a recurring problem at that particular spot. I have reported it myself a couple of times over the last few years (though now my kids walk to school themselves I have not been aware of it lately).

?Possibly related? – ACTEW came and unblocked a putrid pipe just up the hill (even closer to me) just before Christmas.

There are quite a lot of trees growing out of the drains here too . . . who is supposed to sort those?

If we’re talking about the pipe at the bottom of Bainbridge Close, then they are definitely related, and most likely the same event.

Yep, the regularly leaking round thing I have called in before is on the little path down from Bainbridge, right near the main path. The putrid pipe near me was up from there but along a bit, in Lucy Gullett Cct. Clearly a chronic problem, I guess this is what Deb Foskey means by “ACTEW may be dealing with the symptoms rather than the cause of the problem”.

I admit it. I live in Gowrie (up hill) and I took a big Mr Hanky the other day. I’m glad to hear that he roams free in our grand lake.
