Re-development of Hawker Enclosed Oval

Over the last couple of months I have watched a once lush and green playing arena that was once Hawker’s enclosed oval, allowed to degenerate into a weed-ridden dust bowl.

Walking the dog this morning, I noticed that the bulldozers were in and stripping the surface. There were also large signs on the fence advertising “tigerturf.com.au” a purveyor of synthetic grass.

Is this the new direction local government is taking in “drought proofing” our ovals? Have they checked with the various football codes that used to utilise this oval, as to whether their various rules allow them to play competition games on synthetic turf?

Or is this once fine football ground being given over to hockey? (Not that there is anything wrong with that).

wow i thought it was common knowledge that hawker enclosed was being turfed this season? as i knew from the knowledge at softball from the start of the season before it started to die.

and hockey isnt the only ones who use the artifical stuff, hockey used to have a ground out around bruce, but is now used for soccer has been for quite a few years i thought?

Capital Football have a lease on this ground and I think it’s for quite some time. So I don’t think any other sports will be using this ground.

Would be nice if they knocked down the old grandstand and replaced it with something a bit more modern. It’s such a nice boutique ground.

Will be a good home for local football in Canberra and a excellent training ground for our younger players!!!

Thanks. I used to play soccer (football) on it myself many years/kilos ago and have always had a soft spot for this ground as I scored the only hat-trick of my sad amateur career on it!

Good to see it’s still going to be primarily a soccer (football) arena.

This table on the TAMS site shows it as a project of Capital Football (soccer) under a “drought-proofing sport” grants program.

I was reading somewhere this is a trial of an all weather surface which will be used primarily for soccer, as well as improved lighting to allow night time matches.

Capital Football are planning on running Friday ngiht football through the season to entire crowds – but I thought all the games were going to be held at Deakin.
