As the days get longer and thoughts turn to summer, it’s also time to start peeling off the layers and getting active once again.

For many, that means recharging those endorphins by heading back to the gym. But as keen as you might be to re-start, hitting the gym with too much enthusiasm may not be the right program in the long-run.

Anytime Fitness Canberra City owner and personal trainer Carina Sciberras says it’s important to be consistent, and whether you’re a beginner or a pro, there are ways to improve and become happier and healthier – and look it too.

“I think everyone who’s new in the gym needs some guidance,” Carina says.

“I would suggest a trainer would be great start, even for a short period of time, just to encourage and help build confidence.

“If someone’s previously trained, I recommend going back to what was working for them last time. But decrease the intensity, then build back up from there.

“Whether people come to the gym for weight loss, for mental health, or simply to enjoy it, what’s most important to me is making sure members have a good experience and feel confident and comfortable in the gym.”

Canberra City Anytime Fitness runs several classes as part of its gym membership.

“We tailor our classes for all fitness levels, ranging from beginner to intermediate,” Carina says. “These include HIIT (high-intensity interval training), strength, boxing and Pilates classes.

“We definitely encourage beginners to join the classes. It’s a fabulous way for them to meet people, feel supported and motivated, and most importantly be guided.

“It just comes down to what each individual enjoys. My advice is always to try everything and then continue what you enjoy.”

Carina says there’s a range of class times on offer – from early mornings to lunch times and evenings – and recommends people reach out to their local Anytime Fitness for class availability.

Members can choose from 14 well-equipped Anytime Fitness gyms in the capital. And they’re all under the one membership.

“Every five years, Anytime Fitness upgrades all its equipment. Catering to our clients’ needs with machines and equipment is something we are known for.

“We’ve also recently done a full refresh of our gym with new Life Fitness cardio equipment, and hip drive, back extension and hip abduction machines.

“Other clubs including Tuggeranong, Lanyon, Gungahlin, Dickson, Woden and Fyshwick gyms have also recently been refreshed. More clubs are due to be refreshed in coming months. We want to have the best for our members.”

With 24-hour facilities, inclusive classes, access to Anytime Fitness gyms across Australia, and a great team of friendly staff who care for members, Carina says the environment is rewarding and motivating.

“I don’t really feel like I have a job, I just love coming in, helping people and watching people grow. Whether that be in their health and fitness journey, or their lives outside of the gym.

“It’s such a rewarding job, and training at the gym just makes me feel so good and gives me so much energy.

“I’m a firm believer in practising what I preach. If I’m telling my clients to do what I think is important, then I need to put in the work as well. So I train quite consistently, six days a week.

“I definitely encourage anyone thinking about starting up at the gym to come and give it a shot. You never know its benefits until you try.”
