Reasons to go to UC?

johnboy 1 June 2011 29

The University of Canberra Monitor Online has proudly announced the winner of the “What U C” video competition (we’re sure they were very proud of that clever name).

Yukina Kawase and Tatsuya Yamasaki were awarded first place for their video which focused on the scenery, multiculturalism and kangaroos on campus.

Ms Kawase and Mr Yamasaki were already friends, sharing many of the same interests and activities, and decided to enter the competition to add to their university experience.

For this they have earned themselves an iPad each!

But if you’ve got the time go through and break down the pluses of UC as described here.

I took out these gems:

    — It’s in a wilderness setting
    — There’s a lot of ugly architecture
    — Lots of other people from all over the world have ended up there too
    — Located in Canberra
    — The chance to be tutored by the same people who taught a rugby player non-rugby topics and a comedian non-comedy subjects
    — The campus has bubblers
    — There are kangaroos on the campus, as at animal parks.

These are the prize winning reasons to attend the University of Canberra?

This post shall outline why UC is better than ANU:

1. ANU’s student association has the ridiculous acronym ANUSA
2. UC will soon have Zierholz

QED, bitches.

As a lecturer at UC I find this little war between the 2 universities quite ridiculous, especially from the point of view of their students, as the 2 institutions do not offer the same degrees. UC academics are as committed as ANU lecturers, and if I refer to my own experience, the vast majority of our students are happy to have graduated from UC. Most of them also recognise that, UC being a relatively small university, they have benefited from a personalized attention and great feedback, which perhaps would have been harder to get in larger courses/universities.

Sorry chief, but I studied at UC and in my experience there was next to no ‘personalised attention’ – in fact one particular faculty made it very clear that cross-discipline students were about as welcome as flies at a picnic. UC (like most universities these days) is just a machine to absorb money and print degrees, powered largely by international students who are allowed to coast through whilever their cheques clear.

Experience suggests that people who carry on about which uni they went to are the same people who think that their degree actually means something more than just a ticket into the lowest level of their chosen profession.

Why is there ANU bashing when super-TAFE is handing its credibility to the dogs on a plate?

Do you comprehend why the ANU is IN the top eight and UC isn’t even within pissing distance?

And no, it isn’t the hardest place to get into, but it is a lot harder to get into than UC.

I don’t know what’s more funny here… that ANU students think their uni is a better choice, or the implication that they think their advertising is better?

This, from the University who advertises themselves as full of “tall poppies” (not to mention the most abhorrent visual effects of all time) and who list their key attractive quality as “being able to meet people who are not your mother”. Not to mention the ad where the only thing students could come up to say as being good about their uni was “It has lots of libraries”.
Isn’t ANU just “great”

PS – I have the newspaper clipping for the “being able to meet people who are your mother”. Always good for a laugh on a cloudy day.

This is a pretty pathetic pissing competition.

How about we talk about graduate employability? Pretty sure that UC pisses all over ANU in that regard.

Move on to more important topics and realise that all university students are taking an independent step to better their education – such a great thing!

That is not true YoungandVocal. Have a look at the Good Uni Guide. Both universities enjoy 5 star ratings in finding a job after graduation. Yet if you take a closer look, you will find these ratings are skewed as UC has degrees which are in high demand such as Nursing which boasts a 0% ‘seeking work’ on graduation rating. If you look at degrees such as Accounting, Economics and Law you will see that ANU is a lot better at graduate employability. For Econimics, ANU has 6% seeking work rating as oppose to UC with a 22% seeking work rating. In Business and management ANU also beats UC as it does in many other areas of study. So unless your doing a degree such as Nursing or Primary School Teaching which ANU does not offer, you will be better off at ANU.

…top 8 research universities in Australia. Which in the grand scheme of things, is roughly equivalent to winning the encouragement award in primary school. ANU isn’t even within pissing distance of the top universities. It was the 43rd best in the world this year, but look at the difference between it and the top institutions.

So again, still see no need to pretend to be intellectual snobs.

Because the scores are calculated by people who are full of big words and lack actual, real-world skills?

Some of those pluses being mocked are actually pretty attractive features for students from overseas, like she is… since universities in Australia depend on international students, and said students like Australia for things like its nature.

Well, according to Wikipedia- “It was established informally as a network of vice-chancellors in 1994 and was formally incorporated in 1999”. So basically because ANU and a few mates decided to sit down and make a self-congratulating committee? How suitable that they’re located in the home of the public service, then…

I would actual spit on my uni for the lack of respect they showed to the undergrads, regardless of whether it is in the Group of Eight (ANU is one).

Students should be able to expect a certain quality level of teaching in return for the fee they pay, and the fee ain’t cheap.

How did they win iPads for this?

Im not very tech savy and even I think I could do better!!!

…..It’s probably because I go to ANU

You will never get rid of the ‘old school tie’ as ‘alanioz’ said. It’s a fact of life though it is getting better as the die-hards’ disappear.

The only thing that should matter is that someone has a ‘degree’ – and even if that’s relevant. Some of the more intelligent people I know actually don’t – but they are extremely well read. Life experience does count for something I think.

It shouldn’t matter which university you studied at – as there are plenty of deadheads coming out of all universities. The Group of Eight just happen to produce a better quality of deadhead.

Mind you, the Crawford School really put the ANU on the map recently by crowing about how most of the management team at the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant had undertaken management courses at the Crawford School!

Way to go Crawford School – you are number one at training completely inept and incompetent management graduates!!!
