ACT Policing is seeking witnesses to an incident late Saturday evening (December 24) on Kings Avenue Bridge when a taxi driver was assaulted and his taxi was stolen.
Around 11.30pm, the taxi driver picked up two men from the Kingston shops, who asked to be driven to the city. As the taxi was travelling over the Kings Avenue Bridge, the passenger seated in the front applied the handbrake causing the taxi to slow suddenly. The passenger then punched the taxi driver in the face. The taxi driver immediately stopped the vehicle and got out. The taxi was then driven off by one of the passengers.
Around midnight, police located the taxi on fire on Alexandrina Drive in Yarralumla. As short time later ACT Fire Brigade (ACTFB) attended the location and extinguished the fire.
The first offender is described as an adult male with fair skin, wearing a white shirt. The second offender is described as an adult male with tanned skin, wearing a black shirt.
Anyone who may be able to assist police with their investigation is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or via the Crime Stoppers website on www.act.crimestoppers.com.au. Information can be provided anonymously.
