My wife and I have a golden Wedding Anniversary coming soon.

I’d like to enjoy a really good lunch with her. Just the two of us and it will be on a Sunday.

I’m prepared for top price but would like somewhere a little bit special.

Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. Alas many of the restaurants are not open on Sundays, however we’ve settled on the Water’s Edge. Thanks again.

I an surprised no one has mentioned Chairman and Yip, or Lanterne at the Campbell shops. Very fine food and superb waiters. http://chairmangroup.com.au/

Well the reason is that some people can read the OP and are not suggesting restaurants that are closed for Sunday lunch. Seriously, if I think of a dozen good Canberra restaurants, ten of them do not open for Sunday lunch. I understand why but that is the reason that I recommended Alto and Watermark… because they are the only two on my list of a dozen that advertise as being open when the special lunch is supposed to happen.

However as you are of the older generation, like me, you might like to try http://www.benedicthouse.com.au/ in Queanbeyan.

Benedict House also do Spiders, which the older generation might appreciate.

Sage is closed for renovations from the 1st to 17th

They have silverside on their menu and it’s so good. You will need to book as it gets very busy. The food is excellent.

Hi Ricotta,

Congrats on your fiftieth wedding anniversary! I have made 10% of that so far …

While I agree Ginger Room is a great choice, I would recommend Grazing (www.grazing.com.au) in Gundaroo. It is a beautiful place with the most beautiful food (but not as fancy as the Ginger Room)! And, being an old pub/hotel, it has got lots of small dining rooms. Request to be seated near the fireplace (if you want) and/or ask to be seated in a small room – just the two of you. 🙂

Yes, Grazing is excellent too! For a nice winter’s lunch you may be able to get a seat by an open fire too???

I second Poetix’s suggestion. Spend it in Bung! Le Tres Bon is that wonderful thing, French Provincial, real food. and the Carrington’s really nice… there’s some guesthouses in Bung too. It’s quite a lively place on weekends, lots of shopping and coffee and food and stuff.

Try Sage http://sagerestaurant.net.au/ in Ainslie or Pistacchio in Torrens http://www.pistachiodining.com.au/.
I have heard good reviews of Waters Edge, but not eaten there http://courgette.com.au/watersedge/.

Enjoy where ever you go – there are lots of great fine dining places to eat in Canberra.

Sage is supposedly closed until mid July.

However I ate a Entice at the Gungahlin lakes golf club the other night. Food was amazing. Not sure if they are open for Sunday lunch. It’s a nice quiet atmosphere away from the club in a very private setting.

Totally agree…My suggestion of Entice was initially greeted with derision until the dining companions tummies started getting filled with their delicious fare. I had the supreme pizza followed by a schnitzel with veggies and a double serve of chocolate mud cake for dessert- superb!..Def a return visit coming up!

Food, wine, service, ambience. Different recommendations for each. If the weather is good it is hard to go past Alto. If the weather is bad then Waters Edge would be a better choice.

There are other good places such as Ginger Room, Ottoman, Courgette and Aubergine but they are not open for Sunday lunch.

How about Le Tres Bon in Bungendore? They are open for Sunday lunch and have some special dishes they will make if ordered more than two days in advance, including many with truffles. You could make a weekend of it, staying at the Carrington (is that the name?) and having dinner on Saturday, then lunch on Sunday.

Fifty years, and you still want to have a special meal with just the two of you. That’s how it should be. (This thread is revealing all the closet romantics, sniffling over their computers.)

Hi Ricotta

I am not sure if it’s open, but I found the Ginger Room at the back of Old Parliament House to be the bees’ knees. Around $100 p/p for 3 courses, but food was to die for :). Not sure if they are open on Sundays, though…

I would go back again in a heartbeat, and (shh!!) plan to take Mrs. Ryoma there soon.

The Ginger Room would be great value…… The service is SO slow, you could celebrate your 50th & 51st anniversaries there in one visit!
Congratulations.

Why pay top price? If she was going to leave you, she would’ve done it by now.

It is partly because Ricotta does stuff like this that they are still together. Romance is a beautiful thing.

+1 Sage. We had lunch there on Saturday and it was wonderful. For $60 pp you get a three course meal that is modern, interesting and pretty special.

The staff know what they are doing and you walk away feeling very happy.

In no particular order:
Sage
Dieci e Mezzo
Water’s Edge
Ginger Room
Aubergine

All pending opening hours, of course.

And 50 years, congratulations! You get less for murder these days (boom, boom).

Sage is a given, However another option Ginger Room or Alto.

Sage at Gorman house would be my first call for this one.
