I had the pleasure on Friday afternoon to saunter past the “reclaim the night” rally in Garema Place

Oddly enough it was still bright daylight at the time. Sadly I couldn’t hear the speakers over the top of the buskers next to King O’

I have stopped calling them bogans and booners. I believe the Canberra breed is more of a hybrid, so I now call them ‘boners’.

Feel free to use it.

BTW I am far from a misogynist, but there is a lot of rhetoric being espoused by some of these womyn that, to be quite frank, is a lie.

“the curfew mentality imposed on all women”

Bollocks. Pop into Civic at 3am on a Sunday morning.

I H8 miself 4 be ing a man 2. prehaps mi bogahn upbringun cahn hilp mi respel evreyfing uneekelee 2 and chaynge history and herstory to therstawrie 2 b awl encumpasing of awl jenders.

i have an idea:

let the ‘reclaim the night’ womyn and riotact misogynists have a paintball tournie.

two teams enter – one team leaves.

The longer I spend on this site the more of a man hater I am becoming…..

Particularly as the womyn doing the labelling bat for the other team metaphorically speaking

Any efforts to reduce the incidences of violence against women is a worthwhile cause. In fact, reducing violence against anyone in society is a worthy of time and effort. I don’t know anyone I associate with that would condone any kind of physical assault against women and children.

I don’t have much time for re-spelling words (“Herstory” instead of “history”, “womyn”), and I think that the website authors should try and remember that even though the majority of offenders are male, the majority of males aren’t necessarily offenders. Labelling men as evil sex fiends is as ridiculous as the notion of original sin.

Oh, and grannies are hot (especially when they’re lesbos and getting married and … well, you know the rest).

Wow VG, only one flame?! Guess we all agree with you!

Well, that’d be fine, except that a lot of sexual assults aren’t about the attractiveness or otherwise of the victim at all (there’s a fair chunk of granny rapes for example).

So your personal opinion would be fine, except for the bit where it’s completely blanked out by the lack of evidence behind it…

I will be flamed incessantly about this, but I’ve always found it strange that the people who make the most noise about womyn reclaiming the night are, aesthetically speaking, those least likely to be whipped away for the miscreance they rail against.

The principle is great, the presentation….well lets just say some people do a lot to perpetuate a stereotype.

OK flame away, but I reckon I’m only saying aloud what a lot of people think (and its my personal opinion)

Muffin tops are a noice look.

Just ask Kath or Kim.

tight low cut jeans + larger girl + bare midriff = Muffin Top.

Assume that a lady’s low-hanging trousers are the bottom half of a muffin. The muffin top would be what’s hanging over those trousers.

whats a muffin top?

if there were more examples of muffin top, i think all carnal thoughts would be eliminated.

just walk around belco mall on pension day…

He tells women to cover up but calls himself a mufti… Hmmm…

“Are they muffin tops or mufti tops?”

🙂 LOL

Are they muffin tops or mufti tops?

Couldn’t help it

Exactly, Mr Shab – that’s what my Mufti told me too!

Dressed properly and stayed indoors, Mr Evil.

That way all us poor, weak-willed men won’t have to worry about those violent, carnal urges bubbling to the surface – ’cause the sight of a woman’s muffin-tops leaking over the top of a pair of too-tight jeans jacks up our reptilian brains and turns us into rapists, apparently.

But I thought that if women dressed properly, then they wouldn’t need to worry about being raped?

I do not recall ever make fun about rape and never will. if you look at the RTN web site its aim is to stop all forms of violence against women and children.

What I find quirky is there are two links that direct you to two different ethos’s of its members. namely – One for Women only and other for Male inclusiveness.

Personally I can’t see how the “woman only” ethos is going to produce a more effective result when you’re limiting yourself to only 1/2 the population, namely; excluding the perpetrators of said violence.

There were some jokes about the name of the event, but I don’t recally too many jokes about rape. Male-bashing is very common now, so it’s nice to vent a little from time to time.

It is bizarre that you lot are offended at the slightest hint of verbal man-bashing, but yet the rape of women is a subject for jokes.

thats because they were busy informing on each other and being locked up for reading mad magazine.

i prefer a democracy with surface tension over a dictatorship

In some regimes – like the old East Germany there was almost no such thing as violent street crime, and women felt quite safe walking at night. So it is possible.

Do people think that men and women who are rapists are actually going to give a shit about this? It’s just a typical, male-bashing femo execise that does more damage to the concept of sexual equality.

Perhaps us blokes need to start a campaign called “Reclaim the Carpark”, to focus attention on women who molest our cars by not being able to reverse properly.

Worthy endeavour brought undone with the typical male bashing ideals…

How about accepting reality that there will never been enough police/security to ensure 100% safety and there will always be men out there ‘at large’ who should not be and act accordingly.

Try as you may, the pragmatist in me says this is one group who’s goal will never be reached.

While the group does focus on sexual violence, I do agree with you Thumper.
Alienating possible supporters is never a good idea.
That’s why I do like the sentiments of the November 25, White Ribbon Day.
The idea is men wear the ribbon to show their support for the end of violence against women and join in events and the campaign.
ACT Challenging Violence Against Women Campaign is, according to this postcard-thing I have here, run by the Canberra Men’s Centre.

It’s not a Canberra-specific event. I know it’s Aus wide but possibly occurs in other countries.

Maybe that Yank, Ronald T, was right – Canberra is a dangerous place?

Thankyou RG. I didn’t know whether ppl were trying to be funny or genuinely didn’t know what it was, so I didn’t bother explaining.

People should be free to walk at night and not worry about being attacked. In this case in particular, women should be free to walk about without getting raped.

So a law and order… lobbying? Advocacy? protest group? Whatever, they want to draw attention in order for attitudes to change.

is it an anti daylight savings movement?

I dunno – the daytime start could be fairly appropriate. After a few more of Sheik Halali’s speeches Australian women could be reclaiming the day as well.

What is all that about? Some bunch of streetwalkers wanting their corners back or something?

Can’t see too many pussies in the picture. You need your eyes tested.

Around for 30 years and they still haven’t claimed it yet? Are they looking in the right spot?

‘Reclaim the Night’ has been around for about 30 years now.
It’s not that bloody odd.

Vic Bitterman2:07 pm 29 Oct 06

“reclaim the night” is a rather obscure name.

Are they rallying against daylight saving or something?

I imagine the place would have been swarming with cats.

what exactly is being reclaimed ?

What about “reclaim the meat” rally? Not PC eh?

Obviously, they all need to be home by dark so as to cook dinner for their men.

*boom* *boom*

I remember the “curfew on all men” shitfight at the ANU back in the mid 80s. There’d been a series of particularly violent rapes and women were meant to call security if they needed to move around the campus at night (like from the library to the ressies etc).
So the Women on Campus mob did a very clever campaign. They printed up official-looking posters and put them up everywhere, stating that due to the recent violent acts perpetrated by males, all males (over an age, 12 I think it was) were to be indoors and not at large on the ANU campus after dark.
It was brilliant, men got very indignant and bombarded ANU Admin with complaints about their liberty being curtailed like this.

It certainly drove the message home.
