ACT Policing are seeking witnesses to a burglary of a house at Red Hill on Saturday evening (April 27).

Police suspect one or more offenders gained access to the house by forcing the front door open between 3.00pm and 6.00pm on Saturday.

Following the incident a black Cervelo racing bicycle valued at approximately $10,000, along with various jewelry and electronic items, were reported as missing from the house.

ACT Policing Forensics attended the scene to conduct an analysis.

Crime Prevention Station Sergeant Harry Hains said, “The bicycle is distinctive and purpose built for racing. It’s important that the community is aware that the purchase or receipt of any item known or suspected to be stolen is a serious offence.”

“Any offer to purchase goods suspected to be stolen should be reported immediately to ACT Police Operations on 131 444,” said Sergeant Hains.

Police are appealing for any witnesses who may have seen the incident, or any person who may be able to assist with the investigation to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or via the Crime Stoppers website on www.act.crimestoppers.com.au.

Interesting. Most of the time people on this site report having trouble getting much interest from the police for a break in, let alone sending out the forensic dudes.

Forensic go to nearly every burglary.

No, they don’t. They attend very few. It has to do with cost effectiveness, value of stolen/damaged property and the status of the victim. They won’t attend Jo Blow Bogans house if someone broke in and stole his bong, but if someone took a silver spoon from Gillards place they would call in the cavalry.

That said – If you’ve got a bike worth 10k there’s a good chance you’re a massive wanker and deserved to have it stolen. 10k on a bike… Far out.

They attend most. I’d say 80% plus, regardless of what was stolen and how wealthy the complainant is.

I got burgled. Forensics turned up after a 3 hour wait. Spent less than 5 minutes looking around. Sprinkled some dust then proceeded to wander over to the coffee shop across the road where they spent the next 2 hours doing sfa!

If god forbid I ever get burgled again I dont think I would even bother calling the cops again because they were absolutley useless.

Forensics didn’t find any evidence so the cops are useless? You’ll have to explain your logic.

You think? When I was burgled years ago, Canberra Police never showed.

No, I don’t think, I know. I said most, not all.

Not the sort of thing you woudl commute to work on.

You got that right.

God, I’d even consider catching a bus, rather than get seen in public on that monstrosity.

I think I understand now thanks to the info posted by technocrats. I can see now that it is nothing like my 50 year old Australian made Speedwell with the 4S (imported) Sturmey Archer hub gears and double spring comfort saddle.
It is instead a fashion item used occasionally to get (at great speed) to the Manuka coffee shops where the owner will park it alongside those riduculous faux-retro American motorcycles and then perve on it while sipping a latte. Real cool.

They came when I got burgled. Couldn’t tell me when they would be there though, 14 hours later they finally made it.
The woman didn’t like my comment ‘You won’t be needing your finger printing dust’.

Similar geometry is used for an Ironman bike so that the 180kms can be ridden in relative comfort.

But wouldn’t all the salt and sand ruin the bike?

Not even close, I’m afraid.

We were burgled a few years ago. They stole the usual, laptop, diigital camera etc. They also emptied out the change jar.

We called the Police to report it, and it took 2 days to get an officer to attend. When he finally turned up, we showed him the empty change jar which we had carefully avoided touching in an attempt to preserve any fingerprints, and asked when/if forensics would be turning up. Constable Einstein then proceeds to pick up the jar, with his bare hands, glances at it, and says “Nah mate, they (the crims) usually wear gloves, so there’s no point”. Not even when we showed him the obvious fingerprints at the point of entry was he interested in calling in forensics.

Based on this experience, and some of the other stories I have been told, forensics only turn up when and if the attending officer can be bothered to call them.

$10k for a bike? You could buy a car for that.

My car cost $700 and my bike cost $750

The victim might have been someone important in Canberra, not one of us mere mortals.

Seems to be, it was on the radio this morning as well.

Does the owner suffer from haemorrhoids?
I mean, how high and uncomfortable looking is that seat?

Its either a Time Trial or Triathlon bike, either way its closer to F1 than Ferrari.
Speed is everything. Comfort, style are irrelevant. Even handling is optional.
Tri courses tend to be soft handling wise.
TT like F1 and MotoGP expect the rider to cope with a fast but driver unfriendly machine.
Probably applies to any machine sport. Machine’s job is to be fast. Driver’s job is to manage the evil bastard.

High? It’s probably exactly the right height.

Uncomfortable? Well yes – it’s a Time Trial bike. It’s not meant to be comfortable, it’s meant to be aero and therefore fast.

I would expect that unlike the picture above, the stolen bike has a deep-section front rim, and the same, or even deeper or a full disc for the back wheel.

This bike style is usually referred to as a time trial bike. Similar geometry is used for an Ironman bike so that the 180kms can be ridden in relative comfort.

Cool bike!

Who would want a bike like that now that the velodrome is closed?

So the geniuses stole a bike which would be the car equivalent of a Lamborghini.Well that’ll be hard to miss.

Too right. Even if they ship it to another state, there can’t be too many of these around.

Moreover, anyone in the market for purchasing one of these beauties will, by now, know that one has been nicked in the ACT.

So a ten grand pushy makes the headlines but if someones car gets nicked they get SFA.
No wonder motorists are so often pissed.
Disclaimer. I have never had either of my two bicycles or car stolen.

10k for a bloody pushbike!! Hard to feel sympathy.
