Recommendation for a 4WD Mechanic in Canberra?

Any recommedations for 4WD Mechanics in Canberra?

Not looking for cheapness but for quality work done at an honest price. Prefer that they are good at all matters so that I don’t need to run around town.

Main issues: brakes, LPG, and suspension (but I saw the thread for the Vitara suspension – no need to go over old ground).

Recently had my starter motor replaced on my Nissan Patrol (GU) and found the price varied greatly from shop to shop. Lonsdale Street Auto Electrician Braddon, ended up getting the job, they weren’t the cheapest, but were recommended by WOM.

Would like to find a place to service my Nissan without worrying about paying a premium (i.e easy office worker being taken for a ride). I’m not expecting the Salvation Army to work on my car for free -just honesty.

Thanks

I highly recommend Jeep City in Fyshwick http://www.jeepcity.com.au. Awesome service & reasonable $. They service all 4WDs, not just Jeeps. The shop is worth a look too, some cool accessories etc. They sell parts – new & 2nd hand I believe, if that’s what you’re after. All reviews are pretty good: https://www.facebook.com/JeepCity/reviews/

Hi ljcm 1968,
A good mechanic is difficult to find especially who won’t break ?the bank of a person?. I have a ?dealt with few mechanics but our neighbors ?have recommended Adrian at http://www.ultimatetunes.com.au/ . ?Haven’t looked back since. ?If you are looking for quality and honesty some thing hard to come back these days, I would surely recommend giving him a call.
My 2 cents?

Have a look at http://www.4x4earth.com.au/ they have a good community and a “Find a mechanic” feature on the site.

Thanks guys for response so far.

dvaey, I use to do a lot of work myself, but I’m in a townhouse at the moment and have nowhere to do the work and find that the new job takes up so much time that any spare time is better spent with the family rather than under my car on the side of the road. Point taken and that is why I don’t like being taken for a ride by tradies who are taking the micky out of you. Rather get WOM recommendations, than deal with the bad apples (I still like to think most people are honest).

Haig Park sounds practical and obviously can’t get a better vote than “brilliant”.

Thanks Guys

I used to use ACT Automotive & Offroad Centre in Mitchell (4 or 5 years ago now) I was always happy with the service they provided

The 4wd club i was a member of recomended that you get your car serviced by a “4wd mechanic” as they know 4wds. They recommended Monaro offroad. My experience has with Monaro has been
New Suspension: they didn’t take prior\post installation mesurements as required by arb
Over filled my diff (If i didn’t have breathers they would have blown my seals)
Left a Vacuum pipe off the engine (is dust bad for my engine?)
Leaking oil filter on a mates car (not even finger tight)
I had them adjust my Tappets (they told me they rotated the engine with the starter motor when adjusting!!!)

the lights are on …..

Maybe too late for this time, but if youre simply doing little jobs like replacing a starter, youre almost better off doing it yourself. As a guide, for your starter, youd be looking at under $250 for new parts and maybe an hours labour if youve never replaced your starter motor before (15min if you have). For a full service/inspection, youre best off taking your vehicle to a professional, and most licenced motor mechanics will be about the same (they’ll all try and make business in the least time possible). For a 4×4, Id suggest a proper offroad place, such as Monaro off-road in QBN.

Haig Park Subaru in Mitchell 62428245. Get my landcruiser done there. They are brilliant, offer to use 2nd hand parts where appropriate & have a courtesy car if you book early enough
