Whether you’re renovating your home, building an extension, or constructing an entirely new building, the skill required to achieve a sound and safe construction is a bit beyond what any DIY carpentry tutorial might be able to teach. From selecting the proper materials, to conducting the correct measurements, to proper installation, there’s a lot that goes into proper carpentry – so it’s probably time to consider hiring a professional.

Whether you are looking to re-do your kitchen, or freshen up your entire home, a top-quality carpenter is here to help you. They’ll be able to tell you exactly what your construction needs in order to meet your requirements on time and in budget, while complying with building codes and environmentally-friendly practices. Hiring a professional carpenter means ensuring a safe, professional and efficient construction, giving you peace of mind during the whole process.

In this article we’ll give you a quick breakdown of some of the key things to consider when hiring a carpenter, and some details on Canberra’s best.

What makes a great carpenter?

How can you be 100 percent sure that the carpenter you’ve hired will do a fantastic job? Keep an eye out for the following traits:

  • Years of experience. Practice makes perfect, as the old saying goes. With years of experience behind them, a carpenter will have faced all kinds of jobs and challenges, and should therefore be able to meet your requirements with no problems.
  • A convincing portfolio. Quality carpentry can be incredibly beautiful. Take a look at prospective carpenters’ past work to get an idea of what they can offer you, and take note if they have worked on a project similar to yours.
  • Comprehensive services. The best carpenter delivers a comprehensive collection of services. There’s no job too big or too small, and your carpenter needs to be adaptable enough to complete your job properly.
  • Prompt and reliable. Great carpenters deliver what they promise on time and on budget. Make sure you ask about extra fees for call-outs or installation, and keep a good record of how much time they spend on your project so you don’t get caught out at the end.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I hire a professional carpenter?

While DIY woodworking projects can be fun, sometimes the demands of a carpentry project are beyond the realms of a simple at-home tutorial. Hiring a professional carpenter will not only guarantee you a high-quality product, whether that's an individual piece of furniture or a full renovation job, but will also give you peace of mind that the construction will be completed in an efficient and safe manner.

What should I expect from a professional carpenter?

A professional carpenter should be able to provide you with a number of services, be open to hearing your design plans, and able to translate those into something achievable and high-quality. From full renovations and construction projects to furniture repair, a great carpenter will be capable of completing any number of jobs.

Why should I buy bespoke carpentry?

While you can hire a carpenter to install pre-made products such as cabinetry or shelving, working with your carpenter to design a bespoke piece means you will end up with a product that is unique, perfectly suited to your space in terms of aesthetics and functionality, and a great conversation-starter in your home. If you can afford the extra dollars to go custom, then you should definitely consider it.

What's the difference between carpentry and joinery?

While the carpenters build the building elements, joiners focus on the installation. However, a good and comprehensive carpentry service will offer you installation of your product, so there's no real need to worry about having to hire an entirely separate service.

Is carpentry environmentally friendly?

Timber is probably one of the most environmentally friendly construction materials you can use. The majority of wood types used in carpentry are sourced from fast-growing species of trees such as conifers and pines, while materials like oak tend to replenish a lot slower. As long as the wood is being sourced ethically from sustainably-managed forests, then you can rest assured that your environmental impact is extremely low.

Thanks for all the recommendations. I gave Adam at First Man a call, he gave me a very reasonable quote ($140) yesterday and is coming to take out the cabinet next Tuesday.

I’ve had a small job done by Terry West: 0412990209. Good job, reasonable price and timely.

You need a cabinet maker or joiner, not a carpenter. Try looking up a joinery that specialises in custom joinery. You would be very unlikely to get someone else to do the work before Christmas, and if you can I would question the quality of their work.

I can assure you that quality joinery companies are not just sitting there waiting for your call at this time of the year.

Sherwood Joinery (in the whitepages) are reasonably priced and reliable. We’re very happy with his work, as he recently re-did our kitchen.

I’ll second Sherwood Joinery:
One of his kitchens is 15 years old and still in good condition.
He recently did some cupboards etc in the same place – very nice work.

First Man Trade Services – http://www.firstman.com.au. Speak with Adam.
Fantastic quality, great rates and very efficient.
Ask for examples of workmanship.

Anthony Pierce from Pierce Trade Services 0412 525 567 – no job too big or small. I recommend him to all my clients who need storm or impact damage repaired.

You’d have a better chance of getting Jesus to turn up and do your carpentry work, than you would getting a reasonably-priced and reliable local tradesperson.
