Recommendation to remove wood heater/flue and repair ceiling?

We are looking for someone to remove our wood heater and flue (never use it as house has ducted gas as well), and patch the resulting hole in the ceiling. The tricky bit is that we have cathedral ceilings (high, no cavity) which are wood panelled, rather than just standard plasterboard ceilings. Obviously keen to have the job done well so that the new panelling matches the old. It’s a late 70’s house in Giralang.

Any recommendations for someone who could do this kind of job – either the whole thing, or particularly the ceiling repair part? I think getting someone to remove the flue will be the easy bit.

Thanks in advance.

Seek advise from the Master Builders Association or the Housing Industry Association, they will give you the names of several of their members who perform that type of work and with whom you can discuss the matter. Hire the person you feel most comfortable with.

We find the ducted gas heating much more convenient. I think we’ve only lit the fire twice in five years! Removing the wood heater will give us more space in the lounge room. We are also planning to get our ceiling insulation topped up with blow-in cellulose, which will make it harder to remove the flue later, so it’s now or never I guess.

Is there a particular reason why you want to remove it? I love my wood heater, and it is cheaper and warmer than my electric. Given anticipated increases in gas prices in line with global pricing I would be rethinking your plans.
