peter, give Bill Stove a call – he is contactable at Superior Home Appliance Service (02) 6258 8668. My family and I have been using him for over 30 years.

Once again – thank you, thank you, and thank you for all your advice/recommendations. I’ll feel a lot more confident now approaching someone without being afraid I’ll be ripped off.

Peter, Give Ron Olivero a ring on 0418862755. He is skilled, honest and reasonably priced. No. He is not a friend or relly of mine, but I,and others I know, are very happy with his work.

yes, I was a chgef, its a chef in an eastern European province

One thing I noticed with home and commercial fridges (When I was a chgef) is that if you have things all the way to the back wall, they will probably freeze. Usually the back wall is where the coldest air moves to the bottom of the cabinet (Hot air rises, cold air falls to replace it, )

However, if you notice things all through the fridge are freezing, probably a symptom of a larger problem

I’ll concur with the vibe of everyone’s else comments so far- make sure they are honest and know what they are doing. As an employee of a fridge retailer in Canberra, I see too many innocent people getting screwed over. If you’re worried about workmanship and follow through, make sure whoever your using is the warranty repair agent recommended by your manufacturer. They have to adhere to a high standard to receive all the warranty work and if they don’t deliver, you can always register a complaint with the manufacturer.

The unfortunate reality is that, at the moment, 70-80% of the major brands in refrigeration are warranty serviced by one firm. This does mean practically that you can get caught sometimes in the queue. My advice – always get the name of every person you talk to and grab customer/reference numbers – makes life easier for them and if anything does go wrong or take too long, you’ve got all the info at your fingertips.

It’s also possible that the drain for condensate at that the back of the fridge is blocked.
That’s a common cause of ice buildup.

Thanks for your prompt and comprehensive reply. I’ll bear this in mind when I find a repairer.

Peter

Sounds like the thermostat has carked it. You could defrost for a whole day, make sure all ice is gone, turn the thermostat dial back and forth a few times and leave it on the warmest setting and turn the frig on. If the motor continues to run without a break for several hours, it’s likely to be the thermostat. But it depends on the style of electronics and frig, a frost free with electronic controls will be different to an older style frig.

Anyway, if the repairer tries to pull any of the the needs new gas, doorseals etc, and will cost $500 type baloney, show him the door and find someone else. The retailer of your brand should be able to rcommend an honest repairer…
