Gynaecologists work with women and girls to ensure the overall health and well-being of the female reproductive system. Common issues they treat include breast and hormonal problems, pelvic disorders, urinary tract infections, and cervical cancer.

If you are looking for a professional, knowledgeable, and friendly gynaecologist in the Canberra region, this article is a good place to start. We have read through our users’ real-life feedback and experiences and come up with this list of the top three gynaecologists in the area.

Let’s get started.

What Makes a Reliable Gynaecologist?

The following traits are some of the vital characteristics women look for in a reliable gynaecologist.

  • Experience. As with any medical profession, years of experience practicing gynaecology can help doctors detect and respond effectively to issues and imbalances.
  • All relevant training and qualifications. Gynaecology is a specialist field of medicine that requires additional years of study on top of a standard medical degree.
  • A friendly, respectful, non-judgmental attitude. Sometimes, treatments and examinations performed by a gynaecologist can leave the patient a little embarrassed or vulnerable. The best gynaecologists make their patients feel comfortable, respected, and never judged.
  • Honest and upfront. When it comes to medical issues, you want a doctor that is honest and upfront about conditions and treatments. That being said, they shouldn’t be pushy. You should feel free to make your own choices about your body.

I’ve been under the care of Dr Jakub Dreher (operates at Calvary Private- Bruce) for a few years and highly recommend him. He is polite, knowledgeable and honest but not pushy. For my own condition, I had surgery 2 years ago (which was complicated but Dr Dreher did an excellent job). He also made sure I understood my options re: a second lot of surgery, and has respected my decision not to pursue this for the foreseeable future.

My only complaint is with Calvary Private- I spent a few days recovering post-surgery on the maternity/Women’s ward and the hungry newborns and their snoring Dad’s were a little noisy 😛

Steve Robson – John James Medical Centre. Nice man, former head of OB and Gyn at TCH. Knows his stuff.

This is a good one to ask your GP – explain all the above to them, and ask who they would go and see if they needed to see one. What one person classes as a good specialist (good bedside manner, short waiting times) can be very different to someone else (low rate of complications, hospital admitting rights).
