Recommendations for counsellor/psychologist?

Any really good empathetic counsellors/psychologists anyone can recommend in Canberra?

A colleague I care about has just been through hassles with a big govt agency including Tribunal proceedings, has a version of PTSD I suspect, and could do with a debrief.

She would probably qualify for the Medicare subsidised version of treatment – I forget what it’s called.

Thanks for all the suggestions! I’ll pass them on … and yes, ant, witnessing protacted APS bullying from the sidelines (I’m in a different agency now) was dreadful, particularly when the HR department were complicit. The person concerned USED to be highly competent in their professional field.

Yep. I’ve seen it. I still don’t understand it, how people do this stuff. Or why. Weirdly, the HR people are the worst. Help your friend to get that help, or they’ll have this for years or even decades.

Similarly, DEEWR are among the worst offenders (in my view), and they look after workplace relations and protecting employees from nasty employers

isn’t this australia? don’t mates and a pub do it any more?? (sarcasm alert)

good luck – i have heard much good of lev fridgant, at calvary specialist centre.

To get medicare subsidy I think they will need to go through their GP for a referral as part of a health plan. Otherwise private health may cover it

Wanniass is correct. Your friend needs to start with a GP, who has the option of drawing up a mental health treatment plan, which then enables your friend to access various allied health services with Medicare assistance, including psychologists, psychiatrists and other MH therapists.

You should encourage them to do this, I-filed, as from what you’ve mentioned, they’ve been through something pretty harrowing. This will help, a lot.

If they’ve been given the arse that wouldn’t be an option? Have they been given the arse?

Yup – “performance” managed out …

Does your workplace have an employee assistance type program? They’re good for short term counselling and will refer people on if required.

Dr Phil?

Just make sure they have decent credentials/qualifications. The Department of Health and Ageing’s website has the medicare details and appears to cover psychologists only.

There’s a great psych at Effective Australia – Danielle Coleman. She’s highly recommended by members of my team who have worked with her for EAP and other longer-term issues. Effective are in the Media Monitors building around the corner from Canberra Milk.

i-filed – try Susan Pellangaris at Phillip. She’s excellent.
