Asking the hive mind for its opinions on good Childcare places, in the Gungahlin/Belconnen area.

Have seen posts in the past looking in Tuggers and Weston so we’re light on the ground for the inside info for the outer North.

Yes yes, we’re not looking for care until January 2013, so we’ve got time… etc. Name is down at four places so far.

We’d prefer non-catered, but recognize this isn’t the norm any more, ditto for not-for-profit/community based rather than a for profit center.

We send our daughter to Forde Early Learning Centre. Last week it was bought out by a Sydney childcare company and they are sacking all the staff. While I’ve been very happy with the level of care provided, it just goes to show that community owned / not for profit Child Care centres are more stable.

Well that story got a run on WIN News last night, that they were transferring ownership, and the union appeared to be alleging that the staff that were sacked were pregnant/on maternity leave. Not a good look (assuming allegations are true, etc etc). Can’t be doing good things for staff turnover/morale going forward.

When my wife and I visited that one, we were surprised that the center was owned by the Lomax property group (i.e. Concerns with childcare not being their core business, therefore how well could they run it, etc). Makes sense that it has been sold. Who is the Sydney based company?

Do you know if they are changing director/assistant director as a result?

Thanks to the recommendations for Baringa – will make a point of taking a look at that one.

Madamcholet – thanks will chase up McKellar.

Yes- I hear the Director of Forde has been sacked and that they were holding interviews for contract staff in McDonalds last week.

+1 Baringa.
My son goes there and loves it. Resonable price, is non for profit.

All meals are included (most I would like myself) and staff are friendly. The staff retention must be good as mosyt staff have been there since day one (20ish years ago).
Couldn’t recomend it highly enough.

Baringa is a non-profit daycare centre in Spence that seems to have a good reputation. I know a few people whose children have gone there and they have all been really happy with the place.

Further to my last comment – I was right in that the new centre is in McKellar. It is on the site of the old McKellar pre-school. Opening in Sept and they are taking expressions of interest now. Email Majura Park Child Care for more details if you are interested.

I know of a centre opening in McKellar – I think – I’ll have to confirm that location, but know it’s belco way. They already own Majura Park Child Care Centre which is fantastic, so well worth putting your name down. I understand it’s on an old school site and will only have 30 odd places. Doesn’t quite fit your non-profit/catered criteria but I can certainly vouch for them. I’m sure most of the time they get better food than I can dish up at home!!
