Record Raiders crowd for Friday night

The ABC informs us that there are just a few standing room seats left after non-member tickets went on sale this morning for the Raiders final against the Tigers on Friday night.

The anticipated crowd of just over 26,500, exceeds Big Mal Meninga’s farewell 25,253 in 1994.

Due to a lack of additional seat building however it’s a slightly smaller crowd than the 28,753 who crammed in to watch the Brumbies play the Crusaders in 2004.

kudos to the tigers, they were the better side.

the raiders ball handling was terrible, that was the difference.

Thumper – another good close Raiders/Tigers game. I suspect the Raiders will go close to winning the GF next year with thata young and talented team. The addition of Blake Ferguson will be a bonus

Some of us are good enough athletes not to have to live our lives vicariously through the sporting achievements of others.

The Tigers deserved the win last night and Benji was brilliant. That being said it does concern me that he left them with 12 players for 9 minutes last week with a ‘serious’ knee injury that looked 100% last night. It says something about his ticker, that and his disappearance if defence. He is nearly without peer with ball in hand though.

If the Raiders had ball retention in the first half and kicked THAT goal it would have been a different result but I guess we’ll never know. No TC next week, and probably Shillington and Logan suspended, would have been too much for us next week. Well done to the Tigers but be careful not to start sounding like the insipid twat who screamed all game next to me last night and nealry started crying when Croker lined the kick up.

Sorry vg my apologies I didn’t realise what a good athlete you obviously are. Does vg stand for very good? With most teams it is just called being a loyal supporter through good and bad times. You also must have a very high pain threshold if you are bagging an NRL first grader for leaving the field. Shaun Fensom and Campo could take some tips. Deep down I suspect you are a keyboard warrior with none of these traits.

Don’t worry lads, the more Tigers fans troll, the more it tells me they are nervous about Friday night. Two massive chokes in the space of a week!

Personally, I’m looking forward to watching Benji throw a few of his trademark “straight over the sideline” passes and missing 80% of his shots at goal.

3 Try assists and 100% kicking record. That’s the problem with band wagon supporters. It blows up in your face.

How much longer do you think the Raiders will last with poor crowds and a union for a sponsor.

Anway you can sign up up for that great Canberra AFL institution Greater Western Sydney.

This from a guy who’s team is sponsored by a dodgy Malaysian car company?

And I’d think the Tigers have got more to worry about GWS than the Raiders do.(although admittedly I think that’s very little for both).

Don’t worry Kerry, 2010 will all be over for the Tiges in a little over two days.
Enjoy Mad Monday.

What are you dressing up as on Monday?

Kerryhemsley8:47 am 16 Sep 10

Ok we will see.

The band wagon is not only groaning with a load it hasn’t carried since the 90’s but is supremely confident.

Either way it will be another very entertaining game as Raiders/Tigers always are.

I was having a chat to my old man this morning and, from that, I think I can say that my Dad is tougher than your Dad.

You could have at least come up with a memorable Tiger, like Kevin Hardwick. That super sub move that Warren Ryan pulled in the 1989 GF. You know, the one of 3 GFs the Raiders won in 5 years

Long time between drinks for the handful of Raiders supporters

Not as long as Balmain supporters, whose club doesn’t exist anymore 😉

How many Grand Finals have Wests Tigers won again?

One more than the Raiders since 2000

So we’re above average this year, another positive 😀

Plenty of crowds over the 10K mark this year #2, but nice try.

10k is woeful for a national rugby league crowd. Raiders have the second worst average in the comp for crowds. Poor for a one NRL team town.

The Tigers to burst that fraigile green bubble on Friday night!

Unless they choke…again!

Actually idiot. How about you get some tangible numbers to back up your inane statement. Following are the bottom 5 teams for crowd averages since 1982

Canberra (11353)
Sydney Roosters (11213)
Penrith (9735)
Cronulla (9636)
Gold Coast (7409)

All hope for tickets gone.

The reward is still being in the finals despite losing to a lower seeded team.

In the current NRL system that can only be guaranteed to the top 2 teams.

Whereas the current AFL system guarantees a second chance to the top 4 teams after week 1. And I reckon that’s a more equitable reward for a consistent H&A season. And, again, avoids the whole notion of not knowing who has been knocked out.

The only consistent team has been the Dragons that finished first. Every other team in the top 4 or 2, were lucky to be in that position. If one of those teams lost a game they may well have found themselves in the bottom half of the 8.

The excitment of not knowing whether your in or out, or whether you have a home final or not is exciting.

I’m sure I’m not the only one that will agree that this years finals have been the most exciting in recent times.

Yeah, I understand how it works, and, yes, it is good that the winning teams get rewarded during the finals, I just think the teams that do better over the course of the season deserve better reward during the finals.

Having seen the NRL system first in the AFL and now their new(ish) system that rewards the top 4, I think the AFL system is better.

You also know what is going to happen in week 1, without needing to wait on the results of other games to see who gets knocked out, which is a bit amateur hour IMO.

Finishing 7th and qualifying for a home final is a bit daft. Equally, finishing 2nd and being given an away final is also scant reward for a far superior season over the previous 6 months.

Noooooo Panthers finished 2nd and qualified for a home final. Then they lost to the Raiders who finished in 7th. Forcing them to play an away game the following week instead of enjoying a bye.

So the home ground advantage then goes to the 2 teams who WON for week 2.

I think it great the Raiders now have a SOLD OUT crowd. Myself with family in toe have been to all Raiders home games this year and will do the same next year, why well really it’s because we enjoy live games and want to support the NRL not just the Raiders. I hope the final run for the Raiders brings in more members next year. I’m not a Raiders die hard fan my family supports 4 teams in the NRL which is healthy rivalry in our house especially this game daughter against daughter. Go the GREEN MACHINE

Don’t you just love the whinging coming out of Sydney about the Raiders getting a home semi? Danny “I love Mundine” Weidler had a moan on Nine News last night and there it was in the Telegraph again this morning. Those Sydney journos just can’t get used to the idea of interstate teams invading their cosy little club and winning.

I get the whole anti-Raiders thing, and yeah, suck it up Sydneysiders. But the current final 8 system used in the NRL is a bit of a farce. The AFL worked that out a few years back.

shit, bigger than big mals farewell? i was at that game and they were letting people on the field in the in goal because people couldn’t fit.

best get there early.

I’ll go out on a limb and suggest this will be THE most entertaining game of the season.
Goooooo the Tigers!

Must be all the Canberrans that have jumped on the Raiders bandwagon just because they’re winning…

At least the Raiders have a bandwagon when they’re winning. There are other teams that struggle for crowds when they are. (Roosters?)

It’s somewhat understandable though. You get your diehards who go to every game, but asking people to part with their hard earned cash for tickets, throwing in the inflated costs for food and drinks, to sit in the cold and watch your team lose isn’t everybody’s idea of fun.

The raiders have had some big crowds this season, i think it was about 18,000 in the Stgeorge game. I think people are going to watch them because they play entertaining league, it does help that they are winning. Go the Green Machine

I would think it wont really help the Brumbies next season, as many of us choose to get either a Brums or Raiders membership each season. Cant really say the Brums have been all that entertaining in the past few seasons.

The Raiders should have plenty of people out trying to sign up members for next year.

Well of cause they are. Look at the support the Socceroos get at the world cup. No one here actually likes soccer, they go for any home team who is winning.

#2 Better a bandwagon than nothing at all. You know negativity breeds negativity, better you don’t say anything at all.

Just got this in from DFAT, I assume this a directive from the Secretary Dennis Richardson who is a Canberra Raiders board member.

All staff are invited to a raising of the Canberra Raiders flag tomorrow, Wednesday 15 September at 11.30am, at the front entrance of the Department. Staff are welcome to wear anything green, including Raiders attire, to work tomorrow, or indeed for the rest of the week. Come and join in the fun.
