Record Store Day for RSPCS

Record store day came and went, I celebrated with a visit to Songland at Cooleman Court. The vinyl on offer was all donated and was generally what you would expect.

I picked up some groovy tunes (6 records for $10) and now just need to work out how to play them; otherwise I will have to use the covers in some terribly ironic manner.

Songland provides the following quote from Nick Hornby’s novel High Fidelity, that explains all you need to know about why Record Store Day is important:

“Yes, yes, I know. It’s easier to download music, and probably cheaper. But what’s playing on your favourite download store when you walk into it? Nothing, that’s what. Who are you going to meet in there? Nobody. Where are the notice boards offering flatshares and vacant slots in bands destined for superstardom? Who’s going to tell you to stop listening to that and start listening to this? Go ahead and save yourself a couple of quid. The saving will cost you a career, a set of cool friends, musical taste and, eventually, your soul. Record stores can’t save your life. But they can give you a better one.”

That some money went to the RSPCA is icing on the musical cake. I bought a couple of CDs too, just to keep the faith.

I’m interested in what you bought! Was it ancient 1980s albums by Wham? Or were there any gems from the 90s to the early 00s where vinyl was scarce as hens teeth?

My 1978 Luxman direct drive turntable is still going strong …

Damn I didn’t realise Songland were involved.

As for a record player Costco has some cheap ones you can plug into a USB – they are only $99, obviously not high quality but a good way to be able to play the odd bit of Vinyl and keep a passion alive.
