Recreational Uses of Lake Ginninderra: 21 Feb BCC Meeting

At the 21 February public meeting of the Belconnen Community Council, we will discuss Belconnen residents’ preferences for the type of recreational use of Lake Ginninderra as well as the maintenance of the health of the lake. All members of the public are welcome.

Recently, excessive levels of blue-green algae have closed other Canberran lakes. The ‘beaches’ of Lake Ginninderra have worrying levels. The blue-green algae here are caused, in part, by run-off from estate development in Crace and Casey. Sediment retrenchment ponds, clearly, are not being adequately used.

The Council has outlined these concerns to the ACT Planning and Land Authority. ACTPLA has recognised the problems with the current lack of maintenance of the runoff settlement ponds and have identified the areas of responsibility and possible remediation measures. Future meetings are planned with other ACT Government Agencies, development representatives and associated NGOs.

Infrastructure works are currently underway on our lake foreshore. Investment in playground and picnic equipment is taking place. Have your say in the types of recreational activities you want on your lake.

Our speakers will include Ms Jane Carder from the ACT Government, City Services, TAMS, Ben McCullough, ACT Water Skiers Association and Damon Cusack from the Ginninderra Catchment Group.

You may add your comments and questions now by going to our facebook page or the BCC website belcouncil.org.au/Feb2012 until the end of the meeting.

canardly Spielberg will be calling you soon to star in the the remake of “Creature from the black lagoon”. Why not put a cruise boat on the lake?

Definition of a “NIMBY”: someone who tries to stop noisy, selfish people from inflicting their noise on other people who don’t want it.

Im hoping the Teepee guy turns up to the BCC meeting tonight!

Wanting to have your say or discuss a request makes you a reasonable person, certainly not a NIMBY!

FWIW I don’t think ski boats should have carte blanche on Lake G, but allowing limited recreational and/or professional use seems sensible to me, as long as it doesn’t cause unreasonable disruption to other users. There are plenty of smaller waterways in this country that manage to accommodate a wide range of uses, so why not Lake G?

Thanks for this.

The ACT Water Skiing Association has provided the BCC with a report on the environmental impact on Lake Burley Griffin from water skiing activities, in addition i emailed them with a list of questions that I had arising from reading their proposal.

I wouldnt say i’m for or against, but i would like to hear their presentation.

No issue if they are confined to certain section.

Otherwise you inadvertently lock out other users like kayaks and sailors like what has happened at molongolo reach.

The north side of the bridge would be pretty good for it, Hardly anyone uses it and there’s no direct adjacent residential to make noise complaints.

Its not just a noise issue. Wake from ski boats might cause damage to shore structure, natives etc.Especially since so much of it is quiet shallow. Not saying they will just something that has to be considered.

The BCC has just received a copy of a submission from the ACT Water Ski Association, proposing a water skiing training facility on Lake Ginninderra.

Does anyone have any concerns re this recreational activity on the lake ?

Please let me know before the meeting.

My only concern is that the Government and NIMBYs will conspire to ensure that powered boats are prevented from using what is a largely wasted expanse of water.

see comment 10 above – the native american camped there with a floating teepee would have something to say I’m sure – Johnboy has a pic to post…..

I wasn’t aware that camping on the lake was an option until this last week – there is a teepee moored mid-lake on the northside of the main bridge – been there for about a week – if i knew how to attach a pic to this I would!

The run off from Casey is appalling it bogs up the ponds at Gungahlin, fills Gold Creek and eventually makes its way to Ginninderra.

Everyone knows it, where is our EPA ?

I swim in lake BG regularly most summers without hesitation. It hasn’t affected me yet…..

I would like the lake to be a part of an ACTION Park ‘n’ Ride program involving jet skis. It will be particularly useful when they extend the lake.

the Scouts at all lakes use the lakes for boating and th 8-11 year olds favorite canoeing activity is capsizing…

Pretty sure no-one even considers swimming in any of the lakes any more, presumably due to years of being told that is unsafe. I used to swim in Ginninderra and LBG; don’t even consider taking the kids there now; it’s pool or Cotter for us.

Different story for hounds though; the beach area near the dog park is reportedly popular with them. Fair enough too, since they’re hardly competing with people for the space. Why not make it a “dog pool”?

I’m curious to know if anyone actually swims in Lake Ginninderra? I see plenty of small boats in the lake with people fishing, but I dont think I’ve ever seen anyone swimming. Is it the reed infestations that prevent this or the water quality or the fact that there are chlorinated pools nearby ?

I would like to continue to use Bimberi Beach for radio controlled boats. They run on batteries and are clean to the environment. We need to promote hobbies in Canberra.

“Have your say in the types of recreational activities you want on your lake.”

Stock the lake with millions of rainbow and brown trout. Also perch, cod, bass and yabbies!
