Recycling bags delivered in the mail

When checking my mail yesterday I noticed I had been left a couple of blue plastic bags. I assumed it was a Govt initiative to support a local charity, but on closer inspection noticed a link www.allroundrecycling.com.au

From what I can tell, the company collect the bags for item resale in third world countries.

In ten years living in Canberra, this is the first time I’ve come across this.

Does anyone know if this is a new service, or have any further background or insight into where the donated items go?

I filled mine with dog s### from the back yard and sent it to landfill. Saved a 15 cent Woollies ‘indestructible never degrade dolphin-killer’ for a few days longer 🙂

We got one too, but we prefer not to support a commercial organisation when there’s several local charities also offering a free pickup service – you only have to ring and organise it.

Ha ! I’m sorry but I flat out refuse to support the Salvo’s. After learning from workers in their stores that they go through all the stuff before it hits the shelves and most would take the stuff home for themselves – Pass !!!

When I donate stuff it goes to Vinnies, or Communties @ Work.

I have bad news for you Genie – Vinnies used to have a policy that their volunteers and workers had to wait till items had been in the shop for 24 hours before they were allowed to buy them. That has now gone out the window. Suddenly the “volunteers” at my local Vinnies are all dealers – they go through the items and cherrypick out the back now. I found this out when I bought an Italian wool jumper the other day – no obvious label, it was hidden down the side. The woman behind the counter said, “Damn, I missed that one!”

I have donated 3 separate large bags of Lego to the Salvos in Woden in the last year but have never ever seen any Lego being sold at any Salvos shops during my weekly visits to Queanbeyan, Fyshwick and Woden stores? And this is over many years.
I did however buy a large bin of Lego from Tinies Green Shed last year.
So my question is ‘does the Lego get taken before it gets to the floor at the Salvos?’

I wondered that about some shoes I donated to a charity shop. Some of them were as new and quite fashionable. I looked several times at their shoe shelf and never saw them.

Source? How do you guarantee the other charities don’t have the same issue?

We used to shop quite regularly at the Salvo’s and got quite friendly with some ladies who worked there, after awhile they started telling us that they went through all the good stuff and kept it for themselves. It was “the norm”

I have no idea if the other charities have the same issue or not, because their staff havent told me that’s what they do. Ignorance is bliss 🙂

I worked at a charity once sorting goods and had to go through the records which were donated. Someone had donated an unopened copy of The Beatles US Yesterday and Today LP with the butcher cover. I alerted the supervisor and it was included in the next auction where it sold for $860.00.

I also wouldn’t want my donations going towards their anti-gay and anti-abortion agendas.

And the Vinnies are any better!

We got the same bags and did a bit of googling after the concept of selling 1st world clothes cheaply to poor people overseas (poor Africans I think) raised our suspicions in terms of viability. Thanks to google, they won’t be getting anything from us.

We pass clothes on to friends,or vinnies or charny church op shop where everything’s a dollar.

I find dealing with many of the local charities hard work. I know they would get inundated with loads of stuff but each time I go to donate they are usually very selective with what they take. It would be good to understand clearly what their collection rules are?

I haven’t received any bags in the post – I think this sounds like a great idea. However what does they are a commercial organisation mean? I’m assuming it means they make money out of what is donated?

We used the provided bags to hold some clothing that we placed in a charity bin… best of both worlds 🙂
