Registration needs to be paid within 7 days?

Due to financial constraints I only have the option of paying for registration on pay day. This is 4 days outside of the ACT clause “Please allow 7 working days for the delivery of your registration label” warning. I gather it will be unlikely that the registration label will arrive within the those 4 days days – 2 days of which is obviously weekends. Which leaves a few potential days where I am legally registered, however not displaying the appropriate sticker. Which is almost a $100 fine.

This contrasts with the 2 other states that I have lived in where-by they send you the actual registration sticker. You then pay the required amount at which point you already have the “required by law” labeling to put on your newly re-registered vehicle. I’m not shocked that ACT is behind the other states I have lived in. But was just wondering if there is some exception that could be raised regarding withholding of goods – i.e the sticker. I have paid for it but they cannot supply the label over the counter like thay can with a licence renewal – precedence? (Correct me if I’m wrong re: the “cannot get it over the counter” as I could not find anything regarding that from the renewal letter).

Anyways. Troll on… 😉

YES you can pay over the counter, I paid mine on Friday at Dickson.

Don’t worry about it. So long as you pay on the due day, and keep the receipt number in your car, the police will phone through a check if they notice, and you’ll be cleared.

so long as you have paid, even if the new sticker hasn’t arrived yet, it is not a violation. keep your receipt/printout of receipt on hand and you will be fine.

I’ve put my new rego sticker in a very safe place on several occasions. In Tassie last August I got pulled over for moderately exceeding the posted speed limit and as the plods (two of them) circled my bike one of them waggled his finger at me and said I should really have a current rego sticker on it

TBH I find it a bit frustrating, and very similar to teh e-tag situation for tollways. Once you have an e-tag (and thus an e-tag account) you don’t actually need an e-tag for any vehicles for which you have associated a license plate, as they will run plate recognition on all of the video anyway, and automatically debit your tag account anyway based on the license plate. What’s the point in having the tag in your primary vehicle, for which you have probably registered the license plate with the tag system?

In short, what is the point of the sticker?

In NSW they send out the new sticker as part of the rego renewal bill. When you have paid it online, you simply write the receipt number onto the rego paper. The sticker goes on the car.

If the copes check your sticker and it seems something is amiss, they simply run a rego check on the spot. They’ve checked my cars a couple of times while breathtesting me, and the whole thing took about 20 seconds.

All these mentions of people being pulled over by RAPID, evidently the thing is working.

It seems to me that RAPID is not a real time system. I had paid over the internet, my rego having expired the day before and was pulled over by a RAPID car earlier this year. Luckily I had the receipt with me and was let off. They probably upload the data once a day or at some other interval.

Sheesh.. stress less. I think I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve been pulled over with an out of date sticker on the car, or no sticker at all, and never had a problem as long as the car is registered.

Actually, I believe it’s an offence to operate a vehicle displaying an expired rego sticker (it says so on the form you receive with your rego sticker). When I was late paying my rego (but still before it expired), I was advised to remove the old sticker and carry a copy of the receipt in case I was pulled up.

Since the primary check these days would be RAPID, which relies on the database being correct rather than a sticker on a window, I’d be inclined just to make sure the payment is made rather than fret about a bit of adhesive – put it on when you get it.

Ive been pulled over by RAPID twice in 2 different states, 2 weeks after I registered the vehicle. I was told that the database they rely on isnt kept up-to-date as much as it should be. Fortunately I had all my paperwork, and was let off both times after they checked the paperwork, made a call on their mobile and double checked their computer.

I got my rego renewal notice a few weeks back and there was a gap of 7 days or so between the due date on the renewal notice and the actual expiry date of my car’s rego.

I paid the rego renewal online on a weekend, this was after due date on the notice but before the actual expiry date. My gaudy new orange sticker was in my mailbox by the following Tuesday, ahead of my car’s expiry, which I thought was pretty good.

Sheesh.. stress less. I think I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve been pulled over with an out of date sticker on the car, or no sticker at all, and never had a problem as long as the car is registered. It takes the officer literally 20 seconds to check, and the rapid cameras are almost instantaneous.

Having said that, I’m not condoning driving around all day without a sticker on your car, but I used to leave some of my vehicles unregistered for months and only put 3 months on them the day I needed to use them, and then use them for that period before garaging again. If I had to wait for Road services to post a sticker out every time I’d be waiting a long time.

in WA they don’t even have rego stickers. Apparently they’ve worked out that with the invention of licence plate scanning devices that Police can verify the validity of vehicle registration without the need for a printed sticker.

That’s all fine when every police vehicle has number plate recognition. Don’t expect it to happen here anytime soon.

There are 3 RAPID cars in the ACT. There are how many hundreds of police officers? The primary check is still a visual check of a rego label which indicates whether the vehicle is registered or not. Expect to be pulled over if it’s not current for a rego check.

OP, I wouldn’t concern yourself over having a label that’s a few days out. If you have the old label still on months later – that’s when you might expect a $99 fine for not putting on the new label.

Pesonally, I don’t blame the government for not sending out labels until it’s paid. I can just imagine all the people that would wack the new label on before it’s paid (or not even bothering to pay) because they think they won’t get caught as they have a current label on the windscreen.

You can only get your label over the counter if you pay in person at a shopfront. However, when you pay for your registration electronically you recieve an invoice/reference number. I have checked with RegoACT and if you get pulled over by Mr Plod you can give them this number and they can check to ensure that your registration is valid and that you are awaiting delivery of the window sticker.

If you want to talk about RegoACT being behind the times, in WA they don’t even have rego stickers. Apparently they’ve worked out that with the invention of licence plate scanning devices that Police can verify the validity of vehicle registration without the need for a printed sticker.

Having been caught in this trap previously when the rego label took 4 weeks to arrive after making payment, I was pulled over by the AFP suspecting an unregistered car.

I had kept the reciept number and the date of payment, so they phoned it through to confirm the story and let me go.

Not surprisingly, when I arrived home, the label was in the mailbox.

Anyway – for face to face payment, you should be able to make it at Dickson rego or any ACT Govt shopfront.

I frequently only pay my rego either the day before, or sometimes even only an hour before the last one expires, so of course I don’t have a valid sticker on the car. If that’s the case I print off the receipt (I pay online) and carry that in the car with me. It’s never been an issue.

Since the primary check these days would be RAPID, which relies on the database being correct rather than a sticker on a window, I’d be inclined just to make sure the payment is made rather than fret about a bit of adhesive – put it on when you get it.

I’m never organised enough to pay by mail. I just go to Dickson and pay it over the counter, so unless something has changed in the last 12 months, you should be able to pay over the counter at any shopfront. Just give Canberra Connect a ring and ask them. The number should be on your renewal form.
