Registration renewal in ACT

Looking for advice from anyone who has been in this position recently…….

Renewing rego for a vehicle where rego has expired > 12 months requires an inspection certificate, right ? My understanding based on previous experience with ACT Shopfronts (dodgier than Wiki I know but heh…..) – was that re-establishing registration and requiring new numberplates was only required after a period of 2 years after rego has originally expired.

Rego ACT website has no information whatsoever about rego requirements >12 months after expiry. Shopfront advice today was that rego must be re-established – new plates and all that palaver – as soon as 12 months have expired. However when challenged – the Manager advised that if the plates were still in good condition and this was noted on the inspection sheet (like WTF ??) then there would be no requirement to have new plates issued or re-establish registration……

The vehicle has been registered in the same name for >20 years now. It has no requirement whatsoever to have its credentials ‘re-establshed’ as nothing has changed at all. It should just require an inspection certificate that gives it a clean bill of health.

I am sure that documented evidence about rego requirements for the period up to 1 year (pay online or over the counter, nil inspection), from 1 year to 2 years (requires inspection but not new plates or re-establsihment) and over 2 years (requires inspection, re-establishment and new plates) was available on ACT Rego websites.

Anybody else here gone through this with ACT Rego ? Would like to hear your story.

This will make it hard for the repo agents who have to confirm engine number/VIN before towing the vehicle away (I watch Operation Repo on TV so I am informed about these matters)

Okay, just got one of my cars registered and having no rego label is just weird.

Seriously weird….

Do you feel naked?

I’ve always surrendered my plates after a 12 month lapse and gotten new ones. Never heard of the 2 year rule.
Im not sure what your issue is concerning this whole “rediculous concept”. Sounds like much a whine about nothing. I for one am thankful that we have the system we do and not NSW’ no tolerance system. If people keep questioning small insignificant details and looking for ways to circumvent the procedures we may find ourselves with stricter procedures instead.

I’m in a similar position at the moment – have been overseas and car has been unregistered for about 18 months. Advice over phone from Canberra connect was that it did require inspection (although not necessarily at Dickson – just any mechanic that is about to do a roadworthy) but not new plates. So what you said above is right – at least in theory. I haven’t actually gone ahead and re-registered the car yet!

thanks for that – it pretty much confirms advice I got from CanberraConnect as well – which of course was different to what the original shopfront numpty advised, which was then corrected by the senior Manager……

Some other interesting advice I also received about the ridiculous concept that is ‘re-establishing’ registration for a vehicle that has had no change in garage address, owner or number plates was this…….a period of temporary registration (say the obligatory 24 hours for having a vehicle driven for repairs or taken for inspection etc) – actually establishes a period of registration for the purposes of the Act. It makes sense to me – the car is registered and insured for a period. Sure, it may only be 24 hours and not 3, 6 or 12 months – but it is registered. So technically – if rego payment is made a week after the 24 hour period – the vehicle has only been out of a state of ‘registration’- for 1 week. Not 12 months or 18 months or whatever.

If anyone knows better or has tested this theory it would be interesting to hear about it.

Been through this more times than I care to admit.

Rego inspection is required, but not over pits for “normal” vehicles. You can just get teh inspection done at the local garage provided they can do the rego inspections.

^^^ This is what I had to do with my early model Falcon. Once to transfer ownership, and again a few years later when it lapsed for 3 years. Both times I had to surrender the plates (for a total of three different sets). I never had to pay anything for my new number plates.

My new Falcon (less than ten years old) had to be transferred from Vic. Inspected at my local by an authorised inspector, and then a check at Dickson AFTER the car has been deemed roadworthy to make sure the car was not a rebirth.

My experiences with ACT rego inspectors been pretty good. ACT Government Shopfront staff are another story.

WIth the plates, after 2 years the plates have to be “re-issued”. Which essentially involves you paying money to keep the same plates. WTF. (again, this is “normal” plates. Personalised plates are different).

My understanding it is that you have to take it over Dickson pits after 12 mths of not being registered.
I don’t know anything about having to get new number plates, if you already have a set that is in a reasonable Dickson should just pass it.
