A 25-year-old Reid man who was found with a knife and a steel bar in Dickson will face the ACT Magistrates Court this morning on six charges after a member of the public tipped police off.

About 3.50pm yesterday, police attended Dickson Place shopping complex in response to a report of two men acting suspiciously.

On arrival, police conducted enquiries and identified that one of the males was in breach of bail.

The male was found in possession of a knife, a steel post, tools and items belonging to another individual, including an ACT driver license. All items were seized by police.

The man was arrested and conveyed to the ACT Watch House.

He will face court charged with possessing a knife without reasonable excuse, possessing an offensive weapon with intent, two counts of unlawful possession of stolen property, equipped for theft and breach of bail.

ACT Policing would like to thank the member of the public for contacting police which led to the arrest of this man.

‘The community is our eyes and ears. If you see someone acting suspiciously, we ask you to contact 131 444 for police assistance or report via Crime Stoppers,’ Station Sergeant Jeff Knight said.

‘This type of information greatly assists police to not only solve crime, but to prevent it as well.’

You can report suspicious activity to Crime Stoppers by calling 1800 333 000 or via the Crime Stoppers website at www.act.crimestoppers.com.au.

Police remind readers they should not report crime information via Facebook and Twitter.

…Some- was assaulted when I interrupted a burglar doing my house. Police were great. Courts put him away.

…Still. But my point is this: why was he on bail. I don’t know- neither do you. Until then, I trust the judges made the right decision.

Bennop, are you a member of the ACT Police’s social media unit by chance?

Unfortunately not- then I would be paid better.

…aaaaand another instance of someone on bail who should have been in custody: http://www.canberratimes.com.au/act-news/man-bashed-in-cells-while-he-waited-to-front-court-20160627-gpswob.html

“Leclair was on bail for a raft of other charges including two counts of possessing an offensive weapon, common assault, and allowing a dog to attack or harass… Police allege Leclair punched his victim in the jaw while holding a rusty machete in the other hand and allowing his dog to “charge” towards his other victim after telling them he would “f–k you up tonight” as they walked past his house…”

And while he was on bail, he continued to threaten and intimidate witnesses.

So we’re almost at the point of having a breach of bail reported in the media daily – and they’re the more ‘entertaining’ instances – but the jail’s capacity is for 300 people but it has 375 (25% over capacity).

How is the Canberra community safe when we literally let dangerous criminals walk the street?

I would suggest because it is mainly their friends/relatives/colleagues that they end up performing crime against.

Have you had any experience with the criminal justice system?

To pervert what Jane Austen wrote, “to have rubbish cops may be regarded a misfortune; to have laughably soft judges looks like carelessness”.

I suspect you’re thinking of Oscar Wilde, perhaps? Jane Austen would have put it more like: “It’s a truth universally acknowledged that criminals in possession of stolen goods, must be in want of a harsher justice system”…

Oops, here’s another breach of bail – someone that probably should not have been on bail in the first place: http://www.canberratimes.com.au/act-news/woman-on-bail-for-driveby-shooting-tried-to-smuggle-drugs-into-jail-20160627-gpsogu.html

“A woman on bail for her part in a drive-by shooting at a south Canberra house last year is suspected of smuggling drugs into jail while visiting an inmate involved with the shooting, a court has heard.”

And her visit to the jail? That was a breach of her bail also, because she was banned from contacting her co-accused in the drive-by.

…Without all the facts it is unfair to criticise the arrangements for this fellow. I am pretty happy the the police/courts in Canberra.

Ahahaha… but seriously. Here’s another howler from today about yet another serious crim who should not be out on bail tearing through our city wreaking havoc:
http://www.canberratimes.com.au/act-news/man-on-bail-reported-to-canberra-police-station-with-signifcant-amount-of-drugs-20160623-gpq1bs.html

That’s just two guys on bail in one week. The ACT Police are the worst in the nation at solving crimes (lowest clearance rates), so you can be sure that many of the 900 to 1,000 other crimes committed each week involve bailed or paroled crims.

To pervert what Jane Austen wrote, “to have rubbish cops may be regarded a misfortune; to have laughably soft judges looks like carelessness”.

Still happy with our courts and cops?

Quelle Surprise!

A bloke on bail was committing a spate of offences and had already committed a bunch more. How ridiculous he was even out. Which soft judge was it?

And why wasn’t he on remand? Oh, that’s right, our super-expensive jail is too small for actual crims – but we need a tram for conceptual people who don’t exist yet.

And how ridiculous that it took a member of the public to tip off the cops, and not the actual cops themselves – oh yeah, the ACT Police have the lowest rate of solving crimes of any force in Australia, but the purchase agreement doesn’t include proper KPIs, just weak ones like the public’s perception of crime or how fast a patrol car turned up (15 minutes? Really? OK, I’ll ask him to wait and tone down the stabbing).

The ACT’s entire criminal justice system is an absolute joke – we have the highest rate of recidivism in Australia, and we’re about to outsource detention to the actual crims themselves and ask them to please stay at home.
