The Canberra Times humbly informs us that it has in fact “been named Newspaper of the Year by the Pacific Area Newspaper Publishers’ Association in the 25,000-90,000 daily circulation category” with a bonus of two Excellence in Printing awards.

So there you go.

Well they do tell lies, just to sell the papers, sensationalising a story and innuendos, can’t believe what is written.

Anyone who travels around the country, and especially around the world, will acknowledge that it’s a great paper for the size of city it serves. The problem is that all papers are less important, and less profitable, than they once were, which means quality will slowly decline.

Pacific Area Newspaper Publishers’ Association

A Narau based association?

It isn’t digital technology that is causing the downfall of the printed paper. I also stopped subscribing to a certain online news service because of their insistence that nothing ever happens unless it is announced in a press release and then only including a snide comment as their token contribution.

adopting a more collegiate approach

Is that what they call plagiarism these days.

given that jobs are at stake here.

Wouldn’t happen to work at the Canberra Times then?

I think the quality of the CT has improved recently, but i dont read the SMH and im convinced they lift articles from that.

Damien – Articles across the Age, SMH and CBR Times are often identical – that’s because all three papers are in the same stable.

Congrats Canberra Times, and I’m sure journalists are adopting a more collegiate approach than writers & editors on this forum, given that jobs are at stake here.

This just goes to show that the journalistic cognoscenti lives in a parallel universe, sipping their lattes, playing with their blackberries and completely out of touch with the readers they’re supposed to be serving. While the Fairfax papers are getting more and more left wing and losing circulation at a rate of knots, the industry is conferring awards on them. Says a lot, doesn’t it? The Canberra Times is absolute crap and its credibility is at an all-time low. That’s what the public thinks despite what a bunch of moronic wankers in the industry might do. You can fool some of the people some of the time …

I think the quality of the CT has improved recently, but i dont read the SMH and im convinced they lift articles from that.

Isn’t it ironic that the digital technology that is being blamed for the downfall of the printed paper is the same technology that Rupert Murdoch used to sack tens of thousands of workers.

$1200 a year!thats over $3.00 a day your exaggerating are you? My daily subscription costs $7.00 a week or $300 a year

Yes, you are right. I looked at the last renewal notice for $102.48 and multiplied it by 12 instead of 4. Still, even at $409 it isn’t good value.

This brings up my other gripe with them was the total lack of transparency in their arbitrary subscription prices. You can get discounts if you have the right card, like the Brindabella Park Employees card, and knew the secret password but they won’t tell you about them.

I’m preferring the NT Times as you always get a good croc story which trumps the self-advertorial content that CT passes as journalism.

I prefer the Cairns Post myself, purely for the entertainment quality of their stories.

It certainly wasn’t worth worth the $1,200 a year that it cost and I can’t say I miss it.

Look Mathman, even if they gave it away (which appears to be the norm at fruit and veg vendors) it still reeks of rubbish. In some ways it’s the only tabloid that still pretends to be a broadsheet! I’m preferring the NT Times as you always get a good croc story which trumps the self-advertorial content that CT passes as journalism.

How are you paying that much for the paper?

If you go by the daily price

Monday to Friday $1.40 x 5 days a week for 52 weeks = $364
Saturday $2.50 x 52 weeks = $130
Sunday $1.80 x 52 weeks = $93.60

Total $587.60

Are you buying the gold plate edition?

On saying all that, I went to the States in Novemeber 2009 (from there) and I was surprised at how terrible the newspapers were. My hometowns rag had a circulation over 100,000 but it was worse than the The Word, hardly any colour, a million catalogues and no magazines.

After nearly 20 years of continuous subscription, I’ve just recently cancelled my subscription to the Canberra Times, mainly due to the declining quality of its journalism. The turning point for me was an article proclaiming a crisis in Tuggeranong because Gungahlin now had a higher number of building approvals.

I was finding that with the increased padding from opinion pieces and advertorials, I was reading only one or two articles and the comics in the whole paper before tossing it out. The Sunday Times was the worst. It certainly wasn’t worth worth the $1,200 a year that it cost and I can’t say I miss it.

Bloody hell, the competition must have been grim!

Spot the two grammar fails amid the self-congratulations:

Canberra Times Fairfax stablemates won all major categories at the awards.
