Removal of a gas wall heater?

Hello hivemind, I’m after information about how to remove a gas wall heater.

I have upgraded to reverse cycle and now I want to have the old unit pulled out. Dumb question, what kind of tradesman should I call? Does it need to be a heating/aircon company, or can a plumber do this for me?

Or is this something that a home renovation challanged person like myself could do?

Thanks for your help!

I also had a plumber remove our old gas wall heater – it’s the sealing off of the gas pipe which you want someone else to do.

Does it have a flue? If so, how long/wide? I need a flue for my chimney.

I had a plumber remove my old gas heater. You might even be able to save a bit of cash off the quote if you offer to dispose of it yourself (provided you have a ute or trailer to haul it to the tip).

Don’t recommend doing it yourself as you will need to cut the gas pipe that leads to the heater and seal it off – probably not a job for the amateur handyman. Or handywoman. Any sort of handyperson really.

I think you need a gas fitter. A lot of plumbers are gas fitters as well, but it would pay to check. Do you have gas cooking and hot water as well? If not then check with ActewAGL about what you have to do get yourself disconnected from the gas network, to prevent receiving bills gas connection even if you haven’t used any gas.

We had a plumber come in and disconnect the gas. Electrical supply for the unit was simply a wall plug so no issue in the electrical connection. From there I just slowly started dismantling it piece by piece. Lots of screws and a bit of fiddling, but overall only took a couple of hours.
