Removing asbestos garage

We have a garage (the original with the ex-gov house) that I’m assuming contains asbestos (house built in the 60’s) that we want removed. Have been reading a bit about asbestos removal in the ACT but just wondering what the best (cheapest but still safe) way to do it is. I think our options are:

1. Pay a professional asbestos remover to come and take care of the whole job (garage panels, roof, frame and concrete slab)
2. Dismantle the whole garage ourselves and pay someone to take just the asbestos away (and we get a skip for the rest)
3. Dismantle the whole garage ourselves and break up the asbestos sheets and take them to the tip (wrapped up etc) (and probably get a skip for the rest)

Anyone got any advice on the best course of action out of these ideas or have any other suggestions?
Also, do we need to get planning approval for its removal?

And its expensive to take to the tip too with the asbestos dumping fee!

Which is probably the reason why people dump it illegally. Youd think theyd want to encourage people to be open with how theyre disposing of dangerous materials, rather than sticking more charges on which people will inevitably try to avoid by illegal dumping.

Would asbestos sheeting be present in a garage (especially if there aren’t any wet areas)? Why would you bother insulating a garage?

Get someone to find out for sure, and act appropriately.

Breaking up asbestos sheets is about as smart as sniffing glue.

One stop site regarding it’s removal in the ACT.

With the number of restrictions, I would say that it would be better to get someone to do it for you, unless it was only a small amount.

Illegal fireworks might remove it.

In 2001 I dismantled the garage out the back of our old house, popped the lot in a skip and off it went to where ever skips gttaken. Never heard another word about it.

In my view, you deal with asbestos, when you are 100% certain that the material you have s asbestos. Non-asbestos cement sheet was widely used for a long time, and asbestos cement sheet was common up to around 1987.

In terms of your own health, it’s dust and fibres that are a worry so that side of it’s dead easy to manage.

Surely it’s worth finding out if it actually is asbestos for you get too carried away? 🙂
