Renting a commercial kitchen in Canberra?

I am starting up a small event catering business selling my home grown pork and so far have done all of the cooking at the venue.

This is proving too hard for a couple of things and my home kitchen isn’t suitable and will need far too many modifications to meet food hygiene standards, so I need to find a commercial kitchen that I can rent for a few hours each month.

I will be mainly making large quantities of caramelised onions, tomato relish and chilli sauce.

Does anyone know of anywhere that I might be able to rent? I’ve only been able to find something like this in Sydney.

Clearly a woman of impeccable culinary taste.

If I can’t provide useful advice then at least I can drool over pork products. It’s the least I can do ;)p

Please let us know your top choices for rates and availability! It’s always good to have back-up plans in case we have any dramas with our own commercial kitchens… 😉

Thanks for the suggestions. I will start investigating these, a couple sound ideal.

i think there is a place out at Fyshwick markets that rents as needed.

Three Seeds/Andrew Haskins?

The small club in Phillip just near the Southern Cross gym and the pool, and I think it’s the Slovenian Club, has a commercial kitchen you can rent and at very reasonable rates as I recall. Qualifier is my use of it was a long time ago.

Depending on where you live, you might find a local day-operating cafe could be your best bet for a bit of late afternoon into the evening cooking. From memory, Kim de Poorter who sells pates, terrines, rillettes etc at the Farmer’s Markets got started with borrowing or renting after hours commercial kitchen space in a cafe.

There are also a few at-home commercial kitchens people have set up that they might be happy to share on occasion. Have a chat to http://www.blackhorsefoods.com.au/ who have a kitchen in Macquarie, or John Marshall (Mr Frugi) for ideas.

I’d try Cooking Coordinates. They usually use their kitchens for demonstrations and even get tv crews in to record tv cooking shows but I imagine they would be thrilled to have a chef rent a bit of time too. A space like that is a big opportunity cost if it’s not put to work. http://www.cookingcoordinates.com.au/

Communities at Work have venues around the place which have kitchens. Mainly for if you wanted to hold a party, but I did enquire if the kitchen could be used on it’s own and they said yes. Where that stands according to any legislative requirements I don’t know, but the venue we used at Bonython was pretty good, although the actual oven was on the smaller side. I believe all of these venues are on the southside. The one we used was in a new purpose built community building.
