Rescue at Gibraltar Falls

ACT Ambulance Service and ACT Fire Brigade are currently on scene at Gibraltar Falls off Corin Road southwest of Tuggeranong following reports of a person falling off an observation platform.

It’s unknown how fall the young male has fallen at this stage.

Intensive care paramedics are working with specialist vertical rescue firefighters to rescue the person.

8:21pm Thursday 10 March 2011

30 year old male has been rescued after falling approximately 12 metres.

He has been stablised by intensive care paramedics and will be transported to the Canberra Hospital in a stable condition with suspected back injuries.

There’s a very strong, almost shoulder high fence around the entire lookout to the falls. There’s no where to stand really on the outside of the fence nor any view to be gained, so it would take considerable effort for no reason.

I wonder though whether he went over the falls themselves. There’s boulders on the very edge of the falls usually out of the water by a few inches that people jump to, sit on and dangle the feet over the drop. Dangerous as hell but heaps do it.

OW. Been a while since I have been to Gibraltar Falls, there is a platform there now?

There use to be a thin wire rope that was easily jumped so you could sit on top of the falls.
