This harrowing tale in from the ESA:

5:20pm Tuesday 30 November 2010 – Girl rescued from stormwater drain ACT Fire Brigade and ACT Ambulance Service have been on scene of a rescue of a 14-year-old girl from a stormwater drain near Captain Cook Cr and Canberra Ave, Griffith.

ACT Fire Brigade en-route to where the area the girl was reported to have fallen in, saw the patient waving her arms.

Fire crews then removed the grates of a drain and pulled the girl to safety from fast running water. It is estimated the girl travelled through 400 metres of pipe.

ACT Ambulance Service intensive care paramedics treated the patient for minor injuries and emotional shock and transported her to The Canberra Hospital.

Time of Emergency Triple Zero (000) call 4:28pm.

ACT State Emergency Service reminds all parents of the dangers of entering any moving water during and following heavy rain events.

Ahh, how did that happen? There is a MASSIVE grille thingy at the upstream entrance of the drain that could stop a car getting washed down the drain. You have to physically climb over that or around fences to get into that drain. Me thinks that some kids were playing stupid buggers in the rain.

Same thing happened to my uncle in Dickson in the early 70`s when he was very young. Got swept away from up near the ovals and was plucked out of the drain by a passing motorist down near the ambulance station.

There are signs everywhere around that area saying stay away if it’s raining, but I guess kids will be kids.

What a remarkable story to tell the other cool kids at school. At least she came out alive. The things kids do for an adventure these days.

Those drains near there are ridiculously dangerous looking – I can well imagine with the rain we’ve been having how this situation could have got out of control.
