Police are calling for witnesses to come forward after a man armed with a firearm broke into two homes in Downer early on Sunday morning (6 October).

At around 5:10 am, a man attempted to force his way into a residence on Melba Street, threatened the occupant with a firearm and demanded the occupant’s car keys. The offender then fled the residence empty-handed; however, two vehicles at the location were ransacked.

Half an hour later, the armed man forced his way into a house on Atherton Street where he demanded the resident’s car keys. The resident complied and the man took the car, a white Volkswagen Polo. Police have since recovered this vehicle.

Police believe the incidents are linked and are now calling for witnesses, CCTV and dash-cam footage of the two aggravated robberies.

The man is described as Caucasian in appearance, ‘tall’, with blue eyes. He was wearing dark clothing, a black cap and a red bandana across his face at the time of the robberies. He was accompanied by a woman, who is described as ‘very short’, wearing a bulky black jacket.

Anyone with information that could assist police is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or via the Crime Stoppers ACT website.
