The best shop for retro games that I have found so far is the rev CD in Woden. They have very cheap megadrive games there, as well as games for most other old systems!

If you want to buy or rent old 80s arcade video or pinball games then go and see Jose at Capital Pinball Unit 3 47-49 Vicars Street, Mitchell (web – all the Ws capitalpinball dot com dot au). You can buy machines that have dozens, possibly hundreds of games on them – all the old favourites like Space Invaders, Galaga, Donkey Kong etc.

I used to be a video game/pinball addict too back in the 80s! I used to hang out at ‘Pot Jap’ (Page Amusement Centre) and ‘Hyperspace’ in Belconnen. Showing my age here…

I think they’d have some of the oldies in the arcade in Civic, Capital Funland. It’s opposite the new Dendy cinema. They have/used to have Bust-A-Move and some King of Fighters games.

On a tangent, are there any arcades with games from the 80s and early 90s?

I was a regular at various arcades across Canberra back in the day, and I’d love to play a few old games like Strider, 10yard fight and the Original Street Fighter II, but all the old games seem to have disappeared.

Well, my comment is still awaiting moderation for some reason, so I’ll try it without links and using as innocent-sounding language as I can:

If you go to a particular site now (starts with all, ends with classifieds) and look under the Video Games category, there are two people selling MDII systems – one with 15 games for $80 and another with 16 games for $60. This sort of stuff comes up on that particular site all the time.

A few years ago there was a second hand bookstore in Erindale called the Final Chapter which had a few old games for sale.

There is also a store in Woden upstairs on the Cash Converters side which has old games at the counter.

Have you considered emulators – as in, programs that run on your PC but pretend to be those old systems to run the games?

Or is the idea to get licenses for downloaded ROMS 😉

Yep, Waffu is right <3 Rev aka Cash Em In is about the only place to go that I know about… Places like EB have preowned games, but nothing actually retro. Plus most of their preowned games cost more than buying them new from JB next door!

You might be able to find them at Trash’n’Treasure at Jamison on weekends, if that still exists…

Cash em in (the former revolution CD) in Civic interchange/Belco mall/Woden Plaza tend to have a stock of older stuff in the glass counter. I think it’s mainly older Game Boy stuff but there’s probably other stuff in there…

Keep an eye on allclassifieds – for example, there’s a MegaDrive II with 16 games on there now for just $60, and another with 15 games for $80. You could also visit Revolution CD.

If you just want to play the games on your TV and don’t mind that you’re not using a genuine Sega / Nintendo controller, get a modded Xbox and fill it full of ROMs off the net.

I remember seeing a few titles for the older systems at Super Toy Warehouse (or whatever its called these days) in Fyshwick and being surprised that they were still trying to sell them. That was a couple of years ago though.

Of course the wonderful Internet will be your best bet as there is always stuff on sale for us retro fans on Ebay, etc. You might also consider allclassifieds as an option as well. Just list what you’re looking for and you never know what you might find. I’m sure that there are hordes of hidden gems lying in boxes in peoples garages. Another idea might be to try Revolve or its replacement.

Other than that you might need to resort to an emulator to satisfy your retro urges.
