Review - Marianne Mettes Live at the Underground

As most live music enthusiasts in Canberra know the Transit Bar hosts a collection of local musicians each Thursday as part of Cardboard Charlie’s Live at the Underground gig’s.

Last week saw the likes of Playing with Breasts (I strongly advise NOT going a google search for them from work), Little Smoke & Smitten. Also playing was Marianne Mettes, a delightful young Dutch lady via Bris-Vagas waysupported by her younger brother Jonathan on Djembe. Marianne’s music was beautiful with her having a sweet, slightly folky voice which she complements with both guitar and harmonica and a style which one of my fellow audience members described as having elements of Björk and An DiFranco.

After her set Marianne sat down and was kind enough to have a chat with the raucous lads in the front row (she couldn’t really avoid us – we had sat down next to her parents) and we picked up a couple of her CDs which she was initially unprepared to sell as she didn’t have a price set for them. Her CD showcases some of her work from a few years back (it was put together in 2004) and even more so highlights her willingness to experiment with styles and world music influences.

Although not leaping to the top of my must see Canberra acts (and that list is getting crowded I admit) she is definitely worth catching when able.

Oh, and for those interested, Marianne’s mother, Panta Rei, has just started up choreography and Worldmusic dance classes at Gorman House.

Can add my voice as one of the, perhaps raucous lads up the front – actually, we were quite quiet when Marianne was singing. Such a presence, openness and classic free spirit feminine coming through that it was hard to notice anything else;)

Thanks so much for the lovely review!
It was a really great night – even though the lights were in my face and I couldn’t see the crowd and my attention kept focus on the ugly footballers on the wide-screen TV… Hard to sing about hope and peace when you’re watching violence.. haha But I very much enjoyed talking to some of the raucous lads in front! T’was definitely a highlight! 🙂
Thanks again,
Marianne

No worries, Nik, great to see that posts can be edited here – I’m frantically trying to figure out how to amend my comment, as the video didn’t show up. Anyway, for those interested to see it, here’s a link to the video of I feel too much

Ahh, twas Dutch I meant. Post duly amended and appology tended.

Marianne was fantastic – there also was some spectacular djembe drumming by Jonathan, who later also joined in with Sam and Dan of Little Smoke, making it a perfect evening out.

Below is a video from an earlier performance by Marianne and Jonathan. BTW, Marianne has aussie, dutch and kiwi backgrounds, but danish isn’t a bad guess either; in fact, some the gibberish in some of her songs can sound quite outlandish 🙂

She was great…such a lovely & interesting voice. Not a bad night all up, a decent performance from Extra Mild Shag (aka Sam & Dan from Little Smoke) as well.
