rice lunch box

Rice is a new player in Garema Place, up the stairs in the Impact Comics / Redpaths neck of the woods.

They’ve got an intriguing looking Thai / Tapas menu and market themselves as a Tapas bar.

But they also do a $7 lunch box.

Climbing the stairs there’s a bloke standing behind a bain marie booth.

There’s a choice of fried rice, boiled rice, or noodles as the base and then quite a selection of dishes.

I went for the lemon pork and mongolian lamb.

Pretty good for $7.

Just don’t be afraid of climbing those stairs.

(For more sub $10 lunches in Civic check the tag, if you’ve got recommendations let me know.)

Had a mixed plate of vegetables, Pad Thai and the mixed seafood and will not be going back. Oily, too much sugar and they obviously used canned vegetables. Cheap, yes – but totally lacking in quality. Indo Cafe is clearly the $10 lunch box winner in the city. Oh, and you are ‘asked’ to take your plates out…

I went to Rice the other night after work with some friends. We had a collection of tapas and a drink before the movies.

It is a hip little place with really funky lounge chairs. The service and the feel of the place was great!

A fantastic spot to catch up with friends after work. We will be going back again 🙂

P.S. try the ‘yum beef’ *delicious*

I just gave it a go today at 12pm. Got the Mongolian lamb, as I use it as a sort of ‘baseline’ comparison dish across asian food places, as almost all have it.

It seemed to be crumbed in some kind of flavourless cardboard powder. Who crumbs mongolian lamb? Very unimpressed. Excellent service though, and decent price (only $9 with a coke), and great quality chopsticks (not those cheapo snap-in-half ones).

I doubt I’ll be going back. I didn’t even finish my lunch it was that bland.

I did try La Pasa the other week though, and even though they didn’t have mongolian lamb (*sad*), the foods I did get weren’t too bad. Much better than this Rice place.

I miss Tip Top too. Although the food was extremely average, it was very cheap and the drinks were too. If you arrived at the right time all the dishes were freshly cooked and piping hot. What I miss most though are the names on the badges of the girls who worked there eg. Flower, Cherry etc. So cute!

I miss Tip Top.. so many good times there. And the tip top chicken!….

Looks a little grey all around. Is it a replacement of Tip Top?
