The Economic Development Directorate of all places has pointed us at the Ride Canberra website for information on mountain biking around Canberra:

Canberra offers some of the best purpose built mountain bike trails in Australia with a single track network of over 150km’s across five main mountain bike areas. From free flowing single track winding through dense pine forests, to technical challenges navigating rocks, gullies and drops, Canberra has it all for mountain bike riders of all standards.

The riding areas of Mount Majura, Kowen Forest, Sparrow Hill, Tuggeranong Pines and the world class Stromlo Forest Park all have their specialties and Ride Canberra is your guide to hitting the trails.

Over the coming months we plan to add lots of great stuff to the site like trail reviews, riding tips and tricks and the latest news so check back regularly and leave us your comments if there’s something you’d like to see on the site.

That’s one glossy page!

That site is a bit of a joke really, it’s so out of date and very sparse on actual details. Seems like it’s meant to be just a shiny facade, a tourist attractor just to get the idea out there and listed in search engines, or maybe it was a good idea that just never gathered momentum.

The best real up to date info on mountain bike trails and rides comes from the berm. Races, training and events from CORC and Pedal Power and there are also dirt audax rides.

To be fair the addition of Kowen East has added another great (mostly singletrack) 20Km loop, the 16Km loop at Jerrabomberra and the legalisation of MTB use of Bruce Ridge (together with the trail building that is happening there this year) have maintained a high level of amenity for XC riding in the area.

If this map is accurate, I don’t think it’s wise to head south on the Monaro.

Correction:

“The rapidly diminishing riding areas of soon-to-be-defunct Mount Majura, Kowen Forest, now-defunct Sparrow Hill, immensely-reduced Tuggeranong Pines and the world class get-your-car-broken-into-in-the-carpark Stromlo Forest Park all used to have their specialties and Ride Canberra is your guide to hitting what were once some world-class trails.”

They forgot to include Jerra Hill and Bruce Ridge. Perhaps a fwy is about to be bulldozed through both of them too?
