RiotACT Drinks/Banter Get Together

It has been suggested in another thread that us Rioter’s have a bit of a chin wag over a brew or dozen at a location yet to be decided.

I took the initiative and have decided to start a thread regarding this.

Usually we rock up to ABN in O’connor, but I was thinking that maybe this time we can have a change of venue so those who consider themselves a little bit adventurous can step outside the square and visit another watering hole that is outside their norm.

I would like to float the idea of a get together, plenty of drinks and possible dinner @ the George Harcourt Inn

Of course everything will be pretty casual as it is there, no pressure to eat or whatever, maybe even just show up for a beer or 2.

In the following week or so we can float the idea of various watering holes if people want, but if its not the George, ill happily hand over logistics to the first person who suggests another venue.

Anywho, as it stands, I suggest 1800 (that’s hours, 6pm for the non militants) at the George Harcourt Inn, located at 3 Gold Creek Road Nicholls.

Fri 4th July?

What does everyone else think ?

The WatersEdge would be better when it warms up, as breakkie outside there is teh way to go (right on the wharf-thing). Didn’t someone nominate a great place in the inner south? Kingo and Manuka might be a tad feral on a weekend morning though. Griffith, Narrabundah? Fyshwick?

And if I arrange it, there will be an R. On a stick.

Well, perhaps that ‘someone’ could be you, Ant! Or neanderthalsis? I’m in for Waters Edge breakfast if someone else organises it this time (as long as there’s no embarrassing RA logo on the table in this posh place). All you need to do is book a table in a made-up surname, and if everyone knows that name, they just ask for it and are directed to that table by the staff (if someone doesn’t recognise them first). Or someone wears a hat or beanie or something. Much less embarrassing than a logo on the table, forsooth!
So when’s it to be, Ant? After all, you’re a Veteran Rioter, as your stats so proudly proclaim…

The Waters Edge does a good breakfast / brunch at reasonable prices.

Hey overheard, do you know any of the guys from the black billy band at all? one of my relatives was in canberra for a while, contracting to DOD, he was a mean squeeze box player, and had a great voice.

my stepfather plays the jews harp as well, but he moved to SA….

The name definitely rings a bell but I fear they may have been before my time. Might know the individuals; folkies tend to be in about two to 27 bands at any given time.

Or maybe I’m getting it mixed up with a venue/gathering that used to be called ‘Black Billy’s’. Someone was bending my ear about it one night in a session, but the occupational hazard with having D&M/life-changing conversations in sessions is that Mr Cooper and/or Mr Guinness tend to rinse many of the details away by the following morning.

One of my choirs does a pretty mean version of ‘My Old Black Billy’ from Reedy River.

Oh, and back on topic, I’m a breakfast fan too. Next Saturday morning I’m in town is Saturday 26 July if anyone’s up for then. Or Saturday 16 August.

Huh! That’s why I was nagging about having some “proper” form of ID for teh Riotact group. It’s not hard, you can have a R or something. I hate turning up to internet meets and having to go around the establishment asking people a silly question (and for a lot of us, it’s not feasible to do that).

Breakfast is good! I like breakfast.

Good to meet you all last night. Sorry I couldn’t last longer; I was SSSSOOOOOOO cold! Next time I’ll have my polar fleece in the car. I’m impressed with the brave souls who came up and asked if we were RA-ers, because we looked like a motley lot! I had a bit more help, thanks to Overheard and his muffled RA call! See you at the next gig, which might be breakfast again perhaps?

For anyone who missed drinks at the GH (and for anyone who didn’t), there’s the monthly free Monaro Folk Society Club Night on at the Old Canberra Inn this Weednesday night (9 July) from 7pm. Usually a good night, it’s warm (with the log fire blazing), and as mentioned, it’s free. I’ve been known to have a warble. Qwerky and I once did a duet that was immediately taken out the back and put down — my fault: warmed up on one note, started on another.

Anyhoo, if anyone’s interested, I’ll be there. (Dressed in black with a salt and pepper beard.) http://www.monarofolk.org.au/musicf.htm

It wasn’t as busy the week before, takes yer luck.

It was busy enough when I was there at 5. Couldn’t make it through to 6.

Sorry we missed you FabForty.
I guess it didn’t help that after being outside, when we moved inside we ended up right back in the furthest corner. I didn’t realize the George Harcourt would be so busy on a Friday night.

Damn straight – I like live photography….Done some great Matty Ellis pics a while back – and buble more recently..

My user name here links to my pictures 🙂

Nice to see those there who were there. Sorry to have to race off early to the gig (Glenn Cardier); playing one of the guy’s tracks on Artsound on Wednesday at about 7.45am for anyone who can drag themselves away from 2CA for ten minutes!

Also, Danman, I meant to mention: while I’m not in your photographic league, my flickr ID is ovhrprod — mostly music festivals and musos if you’re interested in having a look.

Oh bummer. Forgot all abouttit. 2CA t-shirt will have to wait for another outing. Come on then, give us the goss. Who got sloshed? What did you talk about? Hilarious if fabforty was the only one that turned up with a fancy bow-tie. 🙂 Where and when is the southside outing?

I rocked up but had no way of recognising anyone. Sadly, I had one drink and went home. Nice pub, though. What happened to the Grassby tie idea ?

Cheers to the usual suspects that rocked up – good also to see some new faces.
Hope all goes well for the southside congregation 🙂

“a bespeckled guy wearing bonds black T and blue jeans”

that could be me – but I shaved the sideburns this week…

Will be there at 6pm (if not before). No tie! For a good time not a long time as I have a gig to get to later down south.

So anyway – all jokes and that aside, Ill be there around 6ish – look for a bespeckled guy wearing bonds black T and blue jeans – goatee sideburns, stout demeour.

May be wearing a trademark Buble hoody or leather jacket – and maybe a DCSHOESCOUSA (DC) cap, maybe not.

Just look for the nigel….and that will probably be me..

Ahhh … the Captains Flat pub. Nice place. Is Sean still the publican out there?

I’d love to come but it’s too bloody far awaaaaay. What about the next one at the captains flat pub? har yeah. Ok, the Tourist? humf. At least there you know if the cops are out and about that night, or not. AND, you can choose to have pepper sauce, mushroom sauce, or diane sauce, on your steak.

I may or may not wear a tie. I actually think it would be more fun to go up to everyone at the George H and ask if they’re part of RiotAct. Shy, I am not. And nor are you Mr Overheard. In fact if you’re there at least I’ll know one person. Perhaps we can have another five minute sing? When are we going to get together to work on I’ll Be Gone? And is it THAT Spectrum that is playing in Canberra this weekend as promoted in Culturazi? I’m asking too many questions – time for bed or I won’t be going anywhere tomorrow night.

Gungahlin Al4:42 pm 30 Jun 08

Will try to get along there Dan.

“How about everyone wear an Al Grassby-style tie?”

Tie? Please explain.

Grassby was a Whitlam-era politician known for his grotesque taste in ultra-wide ties. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Al_Grassby

Etc.

Wow, I was amiguous! Thanks for the heads-up, Ari, but it was just a dumb joke about not wearing ties. I grew up in a very Labor household during the Grassby years. An uncle was a state MP for 25 years and I met Whitlam briefly when I was little tacker.

qwerky said :

Tie? Please explain.

Overheard, surely you jest about not knowing who Al Grassby is (an erudite chap like you too!), or were you confused about the tie reference?

Course I know Al. was on a plane with him once. Well, he was a few rows ahead.

No, the reference was the fact that it’s a blue moon when I wear ties. Actually, one of my jobs requires I wear a tux, but I cheat with the bow tie — it sort of hooks on rather than ties!

Keen for a breakfast when I am not busy doing handyman stuff around home….

BerraBoy, I expect that get-togethers of various types will become a regular occurance again (they used to have them). There’ll be more breakfasts, and I’m sure there’ll be more drinkies, too.

I’d be keen to rock up so as to put faces to names (real or otherwise), unfortunatly I’m otherwise engaged on the 4th. How often are these held?

Yeah, those defo laws are used to great effect, to scare off adverse comment (even when the threats are based on non-existant premises!).

I’m going fishing that weekend, but I’ll be drinking anyway so I’ll see if I can wear a Grassby-style tie in solidarity. I hope everyone has a great time, and I’ll try to make the next drinks.

BTW, the Grassby statue – how much do you reckon the scrap metal would be worth…? The bastard was known to have links to the Griffith mafia before his death but it was never widely reported due to defamation laws.

Well, Mr qwerky and I plan to be at the GC next Fri evening, so y’all better be wearing those identifying Al Grassby style ties so we’re not the only ones looking like dorks! I think a couple of others from today’s breakfast plan to go as well. Will probably get there at 6.30pm. Can you let us know what part of the bar or section of the GC Inn you’ll set yourself up in? And do we have to go around asking for Danman or something equally as embarrassing? Although I met Mr qwerky on RSVP five years ago, I never thought I’d be doing it all again (albeit slightly differently..))

Oh, stop! Without wanting to summon up the ghost of posts past, after weeks of missing the ABC News, I caught Mr Carmody’s act last night and had to fight the urge to throw my coffee cup through the screen.

Warning to investors: the ASX has been suspended for the week as according to Mr Carmody there’s no chance of ‘shares’ until after Sunday.

Turns out you were a week early 🙂

Well I turned up and had a beer, asked a few people, but no one was rioting so I plan b’d.

No skid – you are just unaware of the modern science involved in hardening cement.
Impervious in 3 or 4 hours, Hard enough to walk on in 8 hours.
Formwork still on, cut that off on saturday.

Forgot to break up the waste (1/2 wheel barrow full) to use as fill for my paving, so 3 hours later I had a hard chunk of concrete with nothing to do with.

If you had a wife like mine (Love you Mrs Danman) – you would realise ho wimportant it was to lay the slab that weekend, rain hail or shine.

You poured a concrete foundation when its threatening frost?
You’re a game individual, or a Mark Carmody believer.

Unfortunately not querky, I have to put my shed up for my darkroom – been keen for ages and got teh cement slab down last week – so want to get into doing that and my only help available is saturday morning.

Feel free to orgasnise a south side gathering.

Indications seem to be that there will be people attending G/Harcourt so i’ll keep that as the location for this thread.

South siders should feel free to initiate their own thread to organise a southside get together, to keep this thread uncluttered.

From previous experience, usually the bigger (read more outspoken) personalities on RA are a no show in person.

As much as I am an incendiary person at times, I have never really felt threatened at one of these things, having offered many times to shout a beer for the person I have a disagreement with in order to break the ice and have a civil chat.

So far I have only been stood up by the (many!!) people in question

Hey Danman, are you coming to the RA breakfast this Sat 28 June at 9.30am? If you email me at ACTGadabouts at gmail dot com I’ll let you know where it is (in the city). There’s a few of us going, and I think you’ll find I for am not particularly incendiary.

Grassby was a Whitlam-era politician known for his grotesque taste in ultra-wide ties. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Al_Grassby

Since his death it has emerged he had links to the Griffith mafia (who among other things killed anti-drugs campaigner Donald Mackay).

In the same ACT budget that closed dozens of schools, ACT Multicultural Affairs Minister thought it would be a bright idea to spend up big on a commissioned statue of Grassby, a rather sozzled idea that generated considerable debate.

The debate was so considerable they had to change their plans to erect the statue outdoors and instead had to hide it in the foyer of the multicultural centre … http://the-riotact.com/?p=4949 … not that this stopped debate continuing … http://the-riotact.com/?p=4400

I can not describe that at this moment because I do not plan that far ahead.

What is this… the village of Wadeye?

Wadeye\Port Keats isn’t really a terrible place, just very insular, and cut off from everywhere when it rains, hence a bit of cabin fever across the monsoon season.
More along the lines of “If the barmaid\service station attendant hasn’t tried to kill you by the end of monsoon, then she’s got no spine…” than “SouthsideKrew Thugs4Life”.
But still not a place to open a tourist resort.

I’d be up for a more central or southside one, as the George is kind of far.
Nice idea, though.

Clown Killer12:57 pm 25 Jun 08

I’d be up for a jar or two at the Burns Club. Anyone else interested?

Clown Killer said :

Is it worth considering the possibility of more than one location? The George Harcourt for those on the north and somewhere in the south for those that don’t have a map and a water-bag?

I’ll drink beer pretty well anywhere in the south, except the Kambah Village Tavern. For what its worth, the Mawson club has Zierholz on tap.

the tavern is great for the free entertainment, the burns club is a bit more relaxed though…

Usually we rock up to ABN in O’connor, but I was thinking that maybe this time we can have a change of venue so those who consider themselves a little bit adventurous can step outside the square and visit another watering hole that is outside their norm.

Well madman, quite happy for people to organise another location, fact is, I organised this one, and attendence is voluntary.

As Dan the Man is acting as party planner I say he can organise it wherever he likes, but in the future, Dan, you should consider making it a more central venue. You might get a better turnout this way.

Gungahlin is a helluva journey for many people and there are no/few busses around there. Perhaps Civic or Woden or a geographical cental part of town would be better, plus they have bus interchanges for people who don’t want to DUI it home after the event.

Yeah Harcourt is a long way from Lanyon.

I’m up for a southside one or you could all just make it central. What is this… the village of Wadeye in the NT where the community is divided by what side of the road you live on and the other side of the road are your rivals!!!

It’d be ridiculous to have two events for the one thing and splitting the community. What’s next.. a videolink to the two events, Canberra Day North and a Canberra Day South? Shag the other leg!

Feel free to orgasnise a south side gathering.

Although I’d be interested to meet some (namely deadmandrinking and tap), I don’t think I’ll treck that far. (I’m from the far south).

And I’d be interested to know how previous ones have gone.
Have the riotact rivals hugged and made up? or not turned up?

Clown Killer7:08 am 25 Jun 08

I like the sound of this. The George Harcourt however is about as far from my place as a watering hole can get – it’ll cost me the equivalent of a mortgage payment in cab fares to get home to the deep south. Put me down as a tentative starter.

Make it All Bar Nun (which is outside of my comort zone – on account of those spikey-haired, upturned collar polo shirt wearing students that frequent the place)and I’ll buy the first round.

Why not celebrate Canada Day instead?

I’m a definite maybe. How to recognise?

Yeah, might try and come

Usual what? Do they still do pickled eggs? Evil, very very evil.

Very nice. Shall be there for the usual.

Cheers Jazz.
