Would you pay to see a live-streamed show?

It’s a question that’s being asked quite a bit this week, and for good reason. With the music industry essentially migrating entirely into the digital realm in recent months, the sector’s number-one money spinner (gigs) has almost completely dried up.

One of the realities for musicians performing on live streams is that the chances of finding a paid gig are slim to nil. To be fair, more and more streams are taking advantage of donation or tip options, and a number of brands are putting their marketing budget into hosting live music on their platforms.

Whether it’s reasonable to expect musicians to play for free if they can’t do it in person, and whether musicians are devaluing their craft by accepting unpaid gigs are complex problems to tackle. With the promise on the horizon of pubs, clubs and band rooms reopening, it’s only a matter of time before we see how big an impact the music world’s online excursions have had. For now, there’s plenty happening online for music lovers to sink their teeth into.

Where: Streaming via Live In Ya Lounge
When: Saturday from 7:30 pm

Live In Ya Lounge has popped up in recent weeks providing a whole string of live-streamed events with high-quality audio-visual production. There are weekly sessions booked in for every Saturday night into June. More are likely to be announced in the coming days. It’s a welcome change from the decidedly more lo-fi sets that artists are able to stream from their homes (even though listening to your favourite songwriter playing in their living room with nothing but an acoustic guitar is undeniably charming and special). This week’s iteration sees local acts ARCHIE and Aya Yves taking to the Live In Ya Lounge stage.

Legendary Australian singer-songwriter Kate Miller-Heidke is set to join the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra on Thursday night for a very special live-streamed event. Expect Miller-Heidke to perform a selection of her most popular songs as well as music from her award-winning opera The Rabbits. The performance itself took place back in 2017, and this free, one-off event will see the set rebroadcast in full.
