RiotACT on Radio National

Well I’ve just extracted myself from a tiny booth at the ABC talking to a voice in the distance and can let you know that Radio National’s Media Report is going to be talking about open source journalism and user generated content this Friday.

Apparently my dulcet tones are going to be sharing the air with the Guardian’s editor Alan Rusbridger.

It’s 846 on the AM dial, from 5.30 to 6.

The seed money for RiotACT was a $250 chip in from the 7 people who started it (one of which was me) IIRC.

Sounds like it could be considered philanthropic, if the definition of philanthropy is to invest in the community, something the improves it. And gosh knows in a fairly limited media landscape, RiotACT has done that.

Watch out for Huffington Post inspired “we made you what you are” claims down the track JB! :0

Do you add the “IIRC” because this step occurred during the early part of a long evening at the Wig & Pen?

More that I haven’t checked and it was over 10 years ago so thought I better caveat it rather than have a departed founder complain I’m whitewashing them

hmm, philanthropy journalism is mostly the wealthy paying old school journos to keep making it like they used to even though the market has clearly moved on.

I’m not a fan.

Can be like that, but I’m interested, where did the seed money for RiotACT come from?

(And Clive Palmer, if you’re thinking about commenting, don’t be saying the CIA… probably not them)

So they didn’t mind you taking your bike into the studio ? It looks like a shadow of the handlebars I see there on the wall.

No the bike was parked out on Wakefield (the ABC still not having bike racks for visitors despite all their sustainability sermons).

Do Gina Reinhardt’s recent donations to Fairfax count as philanthropy journalism, then?
(Let’s face it – anything spent on print media shares in this day and age is effetively a donation).

Different issue really. But be it Gina or some other big spender, they’ll want to get the news they want to see in exchange for keeping the money coming in.

So, has she ‘donated’ to RA for a favourable angle in your posts/views? 🙂

Well firstly congrats JB on the interview. But on an aside, I thought you said ABC was the best funded local media outlet – that studio looks a few paces below even WHAM or 2XX!

That’s just an interview booth C_C, not a studio.

Do they sound as cute as Marianne?

Nothing cute at all, but very personable and re-assuring.

Fortunately it wasn’t until after the interview that I realised this was going out to an audience of potential employers.

You’re looking a bit peaky in that photo, it must be said. Hope the voice is less ghostly.
