Tonight at All Bar Nun in O’Connor, from 7pm, the Independent anti-poker machine crusader, and candidate for Ginninderra, Adam Verwey will be showing off his Sim City skills for the benefit of the RiotACT readership.

The action will be up on the big screen in the back room for all to see.

Come on down to hoot, holler, and heckle, or just have a chat to the RiotACT team.

Also those who prefer to pay cash for premium membership can pay Jazz for on-the-spot pin conferral followed by swift status upgrade.

UPDATE: For the benefit of future historians it should be noted that the image of Adam, which I had somewhat lazily hotlinked from his site, originally had him in a double breasted green blazer over polo shirt, which many of our readers thought to be a sign of a deranged mind.

With thanks to Skidbaldnir who’d kept a campaign launch invitation here’s a look at the Adam of old.

Caf: absolutely agree with you – the policies are the issue here, and that’s what we should be discussing (not this guy’s clothing, and what his clothing says about him). The personal comments about him being “arrogant and immature” are unfair. By all means, attack his policies (or lack thereof) and disagree with his views, he has to be answerable to that sort of feedback, but the personal stuff is not really fair (or relevant).

Thommo: That’s all very well, but consider that the “choice” to have Adam represent us doesn’t amount to a hill of beans if we don’t know what his policies are, on a broad range of issues. So the point about his lack of policy detail is certainly well made, whether or not you consider it “slagging off”.

Good on him for having a go, though.

“He’s an arrogant and immature individual who promotes his honesty yet hides his opinions on the key issues with the lame excuse of not having time to formulate policies on them.”

That’s a pretty big call on someone you don’t even know. Or do you? Most of your comments have been based on what he wears (“Suss then? Untrustworthy? Unemployable? Unstable? Many things his attire (and website) suggest.” “Striped polo shirt under a greenish double breasted coat that’s too big and done up. You either wear a suit or do the smart casual look properly so you don’t look like bozo the clown.”) which, last time I checked, doesn’t actually affect someone’s ability to do a job. If that’s what you base your decisions on, then that’s pretty sad.

I’ve met Adam Verwey and he seems like a really genuine, intelligent guy with a great sense of humour. I think it’s fantastic that he’s finding the time to try and get involved with his community. You don’t have to agree with his views – you get the ultimate chance to disagree by voting against him – but you also don’t have to slag him off in a public forum. We should be encouraging people like Adam to get involved so that we have choices and opportunities for new ideas in local politics.

Good on you, Adam!

: )

Dye your hair purple if you feel like it.

Tell ’em to suffer in their jocks! Tell them all to get stuffed!

Bad presentation = bad form.

i stopped wearing double breasted when my tailor told me they were for older gentlemen, or someone that can “pull it off” – referring to filling the suit out properly. I wonder where he bought it?

no-one seems to sell them any more.

though vinnies did have a couple last time i was there….

oh well, seeing kate isn’t filling bill’s shoes in the libs, I won’t have to worry….

and when are we going to hear from mark parton, independent for Ginninderra??

Wow iCanberran, way to take a clearly unserious candidate, and criticise all his jokes as if he were serious. What a hero!

“derrr suit derrr, derrr Adam08 derrr”. Classic vitriol there.

If he has a bong in his pocket, then I hope it’s made out of garden hose and a juice bottle.

Those store purchased bongs are what druggos use, dontcha know.

“It’s likely that Jon Stanhope will try and steal most of my ideas”

And your website, Adam08, isn’t an idea burrowed from a certain super nerd PM, good old Kevin07? At least the rhymed.

Shifty? Shifty! … How do you get shifty? … Good grief!

Suss then? Untrustworthy? Unemployable? Unstable? Many things his attire (and website) suggest.
Ironically, his own website says on the home page “if you like what you see, then send a vote my way.” Well I don’t, so I wont.

I do though find humour in his excuse as to why he has only three policies, on transport, pokies and the environment namely.
He says on his site:

“As an independent candidate who works a regular 9-5 job, it’s a bit more difficult for me to churn out policies like the major parties – who have tax payer funded teams of policy writers. It’s likely that Jon Stanhope will try and steal most of my ideas – he already came out with a free bus service and suggested light rail just days after I spoke about these with a journalist.”

Well he must be forgetting weekends and the sixteen hours he’s not at work. And what’s regular about a 9-5 job, I don’t know anyone who works those hours. I’m there 8 to 6, 5 days a week.

If this joker were serious about running as an MLA, his campaign budget (as shown on his site) would be more than a couple of hundred bucks, he’d dress like he means it and he’d have a policy on every major issue. Surely he has opinions on the economy, education, development, health and aged care even if they don’t amount to whole structured policies.
He’s an arrogant and immature individual who promotes his honesty yet hides his opinions on the key issues with the lame excuse of not having time to formulate policies on them.

Shifty? Shifty! … How do you get shifty? … Good grief!

He was much more suitably attired this evening at ABN. Having some issues with traffic when I left, but he had advisers on hand (almost literally!) All will become clear when the slideshow and moving vision goes up.

Striped polo shirt under a greenish double breasted coat that’s too big and done up. You either wear a suit or do the smart casual look properly so you don’t look like bozo the clown. Do you really expect to be taken seriously? You look look shiftier than Nixon and at least he did a victory sign with his hands, not some lame thumbs up. Oh well, he’s an indie so I need not worry about him getting elected at least 🙂

How do you know that his bong even fits in his pocket?

Looks like he’s on his way out to The Firehouse! Bring it on Bel Biv Devoe!

Is that a bong in your pocket, or are you just glad to see me?

you mean to tell me he’s foregoing a night in with his ‘awesome girlfriend’ for this? that’s dedication!

I bet he has a bong in his pocket.

Yep clearly Sepi would be all over him like a bad suit – but wait – he’s already got one…

Well said, that grrrrl.

(Not that I echo the sentiments as I simply do not swing that way, but in the context of previous threads, that was frickin’ hilarious.)

Typical of you, sepi!

You always have to drag things down to the gutter, don’t you 😉

*hehe*

That’s pretty good, but you have to wind down the car window and bang on the door while you say it.

Phwaoar!!! I”d hit it!!!

Great to see voters placing substance over style.

Sepi take note of this thread.

tylersmayhem4:43 pm 28 Aug 08

…and holy crap – is that a striped polo shirt he has under the jacket?!

tylersmayhem4:42 pm 28 Aug 08

That’s the worst suit I’ve seen since my year 12 formal suit hired from Roger David back in the 90’s!

That jacket reminds me of a suit my parents bought me back in ’92.

Bloody lefty ruining economic confidence with that jacket and polo combo

I thought it was just a comment on the fact that he appears (in the picture) to be leaning to the left. (That’s his left, not stage left.)

AussieGal83 said :

‘Independant’. I’m pretty sure he leans quite strongly to the left.

Independence in political terms does not connotate an independence from a particular ideology (which is an impossibility) but from a political party.

Judging from his UCSA days, he is leftwing though.

I S4anta, here by volunter to be head pokie smashing dude if Mr Verwey gets to a stage where he needs pokie smashing winged monkeys.

He has a nice smile.
