RiotACT turns 10

27 November 2000 was Day 1 for RiotACT. The oldest accessible remnant of which is on archive.org without any of the image files.

So as we prepare to enter our teenage years (girls! cars! booze!, [or from a feminine perspective: listening to Lady Gaga, having ‘dates’ at the mall and demanding a mobile phone – thanks to Amanda Hugankiss]) we’re asking readers to nominate their favourite Riot moments over the last ten years.

We’d also like to know how you started reading and why you’re still here.

Go crazy.

Oh and happy birthday Riot!! It has got me through many a boring day in the office and is always good for a laugh!

10 years? Crap! Has it been that long? Looking at my stats I’ve only commented about twice a year under this user name (lost my first one somehow). Still remember sitting round the front of an Aranda property with a case of beer or two and listening as the guys first discussed setting it up… running their own servers (I commented then that was a crazy idea)… I guess I’ve enjoyed lurking rather than commenting, but also watched more keenly how a bunch of ‘berra mates have travelled on this strange journey … from group blog where they could continue their weekend arguments while at work (working in ACT has always seemed sooo easy;), to hansard, political watch-lists, numerous unsuccessful legal actions (against them only;), mainstream media quoting, legal case influencing (Marist/Darra sex abuse), JB back and forth, rioters making and breaking themselves on the pages, kids being born, company formation, outside investors and now… trying to take over the world… my how time shows our true colours;) lol

Great effort guys and gals… every medium sized town with an IT literate workforce with lots of spare time should have one… 😉 Here’s to another ten, when you can grow up, leave home and make you’re own money…

I remember the boys sitting out the front of our place talking about the Riotact idea over a couple of beers. It’s good to see the idea not only came about but has continuously grown over the years to it’s current format.

Keep it up – I love your work.

Me no fry “Yes please! Good idea. Oh, and does anyone know what crazy Chester’s original grievance was? Have read some of her stuff and it’s …… disturbing.”

A Doctor slapped her on the bottom.

Well done JB and friends. You pulled off the impossible and created a unique community site that has gone the distance. The new moderation is great. I miss disappearing posts and never really knowing why. Someone should start a Canberra gossip site………………

Its the only news outlet where anyone can publish a story and photos in twenty minutes and then get comments that fill in the blanks. Thats why I came here.

The first RA article I ever read was a report on someone’s (Thumper’s?) urbexing trip to Cameron Offices.

Nope, not me. Bonfire perhaps?

Yes, that was me. I’m in Melbourne now. Too many softheads in Canberra. I think RA ‘jumped the shark’ after JB’s Seachange experiment.

I miss SGS and still wonder whether he was real or an elaborate ANU/UC media student prank.

I’m here because I enjoy angry some people get. Especially about “how things SHOULD be”…

Like many others, I can’t remember what brought me to the site. It’s a good mix of news, events, rants etc. Gets a bit heated at times, but it’s all in good fun – well, for me at least.

My favorite post was about JB getting slapped around by Troy Takiari. My second was the Wig and Pen episode where they booted everyone for wearing tweed and parking their bikes out the front.

I’d never seen either of those before – perhaps the occasion of the 10th anniversary warrants a “Best of RiotACT” post for those who came in late?

+1 agreed. I feel like I’ve missed out!

Hey, RiotACT. Let’s see, I think I’ve been reading for about a year, probably found it by googling something to do with Canberra restaurant recommendations or trades services or cycling debates. And it seems to deliver on all three, so thanks and keep up the good work.

i’m a bit late weighing in, but i think it wonderful that the site still exists despite some soul searching, sea changes and close calls.

the support that this site provides to local businesses, artists and community groups is truly one of its strong points and something for which i am forever appreciative.

thanks guys.

In my experience the RA is about as accurate as the CT. Still it is a much better read.

Hmmm, So I just read this “Dances with nutters” thread.

I am now left wondering if I am glad for the laugh, concerned such a creature lurks in our society or annoyed I spent my time reading the whole thread and along with it all her dribble.

I have only started reading the site on a regular basis recently but certainly enjoy the madness and particularly love any thread regarding lycra loving left wing lunatics and the havoc they cause the humble car driver 🙂

It was something that didnt even make it on to the site. We refused to publish a post claiming a conspiracy against CC between CIT and pretty much every government department you’d care to name. In the end Riot and everyone who reads it became co-conspirators by association.

I started reading RA when I heard about it through a work colleague a few years back who told me it was the only ‘real’ news site in Canberra.

I like the rants even though they can push the cringe-worthy boundary at times.

Nice to know I share the same birthday with RA (unfortunately I’m a lot older).

Happy Birthday to us!

I saw the bird of peace the other day,
flying through the sky
pursued by people who hate him.

I took my gun and shot him down
I saw the bird of peace on the ground
and ate him.

Oh bird of peace, you tasted real good,
I had you with mint sauce.
All my friend asked me how I felt
Well I felt peaceful, of course.

Well, I guess you should be careful what you wish for…I have read Crazy Chesters crazy blog of craziness and caught up on all the craziosity that has occured since it went secret.

It is just a shame that there is no capacity to leave comments.
