RiotACT relies on the generosity of its sponsors.

Without their support this weird and sometimes wonderful place would collapse under its own weight.

So it’s with considerable pleasure that we present to you our latest sponsor allclassifieds.com.au.

The Canberra based All Classifieds is an online marketplace for people looking to buy, or looking to sell, pretty much anything. Much like RiotACT the overwhelming majority of their traffic comes from Canberra

Established in 2002, allclassifieds.com.au receives more than 160,000 views every day. Placing classifieds is free, with many users opting to pay an additional charge of $15 to include a photograph with their listing (as a Christmas special All Classifieds are now actually giving the first photo for free until the end of December). It’s easy to post a listing, and users can update them.

Allclassifieds users are looking to buy and generally have high disposable incomes.

To date more than 52,842 items have been listed and sold.

Oh, I just took advantage of the free photo offer on all classifieds, and I couldn’t see a way of uploading the free photo without submitting my credit card details, even though a zero dollar amount was listed. A bit dodgy, but never mind.

Yeah XP also.

If you want to view that sentence as part of an advertisement, then sure. There would _need_ to be sufficient data somewhere to back it up the claim, for Trade Practices reasons if nothing else.

But on the one hand telling us that RiotACT’s objectivity towards AllClassifieds has just changed, and on the other leaving a statement actually authored by the new friend but signed by RiotACT’s Editor just hanging there, without any reference to _why_ it should be trusted (other than that you want readers to have faith in Jb’s authority, and your assessment that it is possibly a an accurate and precise representation of fact), is currently not convincing me, though.

Windows XP. The ad that covers the banner is clearly designed as a horizontal ad rather than the vertical one you’ve been running down the side. Perhaps it is some sort of problem at Google where they push through the wrong shape?

Caf & Ari – Can I also ask what OS you are running? Windows XP? Vista? Ubuntu 8.04? OS2?!?

If it makes you feel better Skid, I asked johnboy to put it up.

As i assume the statement you’re referring to is who AllClassified users are as the unqualified one, its only unqualified by you. Am sure there is data to substantiate that claim

Just happened to me as well. Firefox 2.0.0.something

Kramer: Firefox 3. I’ve noticed at least one other ad doing it sometimes too – I’ll take a screenshot next time.

Blackshaw Real Estate now owns it IIRC.

Yes and no. My understanding is that Independent Property Group bought out Peter Blackshaw Real Estate a while back, so Blackshaw is now an employee only for the agency.

However, Peter Blackshaw (and possibly others, I’m not sure) owns allhomes etc.

Blackshaw Real Estate now owns it IIRC.

By the way – I’ve wondered for a while, who founded allhomes & allclassifieds? Who owns it? Who runs it?

I recognise your business case to have the costs of providing support equipment, website and content admin services to a mostly freeloading audience.
And hooray for Allclassifieds for both cost-effectively reaching their message to an audience likely to use their service, engaging a local business for their services, and supporting a community media experiment.

But that one sentence of unqualified provided content does jarringly alter the uh, tone, but not exactly the message, of the other 150 words, considering they’ve been signed by an ordinarily critical journalist and Editor, instead of another part of the RiotCabal or the Sales team, though.

(haha..see! I can’t even spell!)

I guess we forgot how much smater than us you are JB.

What browser are you running?

Speaking of advertorial. How is the search going for the sales gimp?

Seeing as we don’t do advertorial it won’t be any test of my skills whatsoever.

I am a little surprised by a disclosure being attacked as advertorial. But sadly not very.

This will be an interesting test of Johnboy’s skill! Classifieds don’t lend themselves to advertorial in the same way as the Canberra Musicians Club.

I think perhaps everyone is reading too much into this and/or making mountains out of mole hills. The fact is RA is a business that provides and/or facilitates content we all clearly want to see and interact with. That costs them money, and clearly this is one of the many ways they offset that cost and hopefully turn a profit.

Nobody has tried to pass it off as anything other than a commercial arrangement.

It’s actually quite problematic. For all we laugh at a particular columnist in the Canberra Times, and dis their website, RiotAct doesn’t function as even the shadow of a broadsheet newspaper or a journal. If classifieds are still an important income stream to keep newspapers going – and journalists and real columnists paid and writing – the RiotAct + Allhomes trumpeting a partnership in competition with the Times isn’t actually a good news story for the Canberra community, politics and serious conversation. And I agree, running this as the main article just serves to underline that this site – while wonderful – shouldn’t put tickets on itself as anything other than a community gossip site.

This just in: while many charities are run as businesses, not all businesses operate as charities.

The RiotACT entered into a commercial arrangement with a sponsor. And they’re bringing it to our attention.

allclassifieds/allhomes built up a market demand and then chose to apply a charge for that service. Hardly building a precedent there. They’re just following some very well-worn indentations in the road on that one.

allclassifieds are probably quite happy about the continuing attention this news is receiving here. I know I clicked on the ad a couple of times today to look for stuff. Itsa works.

allclassifieds also has an advert for RiotACT.. Coincidence? I think not — who knows where this will all end, allriots? To the earlier questioner, allhomes started charging $21 to list your own share-house advertisement with a creditcard — more to put up your own rental listing. I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt and blame the credit crunch.

“Well that was a rather shameless promotion.”

It may well have been a clause in the sponsorship deal for the advertorial.

Good work on picking up another sponsor.

Imagine how good this would have been if Moyra was on board!

You getting a new sponsor is top story news?

it’s big news to us.

TV news makes a similar mistake fairly often…
News that excites a small group of people in the WIN HQ\ABC Studio\RiotBunker is not always actually exciting\interesting for the rest of the world.

I noticed you had a new sponsor (the ad’s been running for some time now) and then you went and made this issue out of it by running advertorial instead of just giving publicity and profile…

Minor point, but when does Velocity Internet get its own (belated) Sponsor’s Welcome like you mention in your advertising page, and do they also get to provide their own copy?

allclassified may work well, but allhomes doesn’t keep its sales figures and statistics up to date …

Yeah, you’re right. Don’t mind me then.

Have bought and sold plenty of stuff on AllClassifieds including all the equipment for my gym, easy and so much cheaper than buying it new.

Interesting – I’m not worried about whether it’s a valid claim or anything – who really cares – I’m just interested in whether they’ve just got that there as a throw away line or if it’s based on some sort of survey. *shrug*

When you remove an ad from their listings you’re asked to complete a short survey. Although, I can’t remember if they ask your household income at that point or not.

Thanks Jazz.

That claim came from all classifieds cameron

Tell ’em they’re dreaming!

Is it too much to hope that this signals an end to the TV ads featuring that smarmy bastard?

Advertised three bikes for sale earlier this year. Results were:

Canberra Times Saturday classifieds – 0 from 3
Allclassifieds no photo – 1 from 3
Allclassifieds with photos – 2 from 2

Yes, that’s an interesting statistic… where on earth have they pulled that from? Is that something you’ve put in JB or an allclassified claim?

“Allclassifieds users …………….. generally have high disposable incomes.”

Says who ?

Bought my home through allhomes and sold my old washing machine through allclassifieds, with no problems in either instance. I for one welcome our new advertising overlords.

allhomes and allclassifieds are actually rather well-designed sites. They’re good and simple to navigate, they work well. I’m often struck by it.

Go to a RE Agency site after using allhomes, there’s no contest, most of them are shockers. It certainly deserves to be where it is in teh market. I appreciate well-done things.

I think they’ve set up a jobs site in tandem, too.

Fair point Holden Caulfield…I’ll get back in my box.

RiotACT has often bagged out the likes of City News for their “advertorial” policies…now they’ve joined them. Just making that point.

Far be it from me to stick up for johnboy, but I reckon there’s a difference between an advertiser providing copy and it being presented as genuine editorial and an editor openly announcing a new sponsorship/advertising arrangement, with a few facts and figures thrown in.

I think it was pretty obvious that the article was from a paying customer, what with the title and all….

I haven’t use allclassified, but my experience with allhomes has been good, and I assume they are connected somehow…

Boo to Allhomes for now charging for finding a flatmate!

Ahh, they ARE a business though. They kinda have to make money to operate! How much is the charge BTW?
——————-
I also believe they have or had free posting of photos for this week or last or something. Good deal me thinks.

Still take my hat off to AllClassifieds for my 80 roof tiles for $30! Gold!

I’ve sold a couple of things via AllClassies in recent months. Reckon I’ll give the free photo offer to try and offload a few more now!

I got an excellent Hills swing set for the kids Christmas present a few years ago on All Classifieds. If anyone is short of cash and needs to shop I recommend it.

I have nothing but nice things to say about All Classifieds. I found my two magnificent babysitters there who have made my returning to work so much easier than it might have otherwise been.

I got my fridge through allclassifieds a few years back. It’s a good service, much better than the ones in the paper, and smart sellers put pictures up too.

Nothing wrong with the chief gonzo justifying his existence.
